"Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom." Matthew 20:20-28.
You know James; he was the brother of John; they were the sons of Zebedee. It was their mother who asked Jesus that her sons be honored.
People always say, "Watch out for what you ask for; you may get it." Well when mom ask this for her sons, Jesus asked if they were able to drink the cup that he was about to drink. Excitedly, I believe, they said, "Oh, we can." And James did suffer a martyr's death.
How many of us have "bartered" with God? I know I have in the time of extreme illness. Isn't it ironic? We think so small, we humans. God supplies our every need; not our every whim.
Oh God, Lord of all; help us to so praise and glorify you that our hearts can have no room for building up ourselves and cutting down others. Keep us mindful of the saints who have gone before us and now pray for us night and day, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
