Now you shall see weather my word will come true for you or not. Numbers 11:1-23.
Many churches make Bible Study a part of their meetings. I hope they occasionally read from Numbers, preferably out load. Nothing could more quickly put church life into historical perspective, or more quickly bring a smile to the face of these servants of God.
The story of the Bible is one of a long and complicated love affair. God is the main character.
God is always the main character - and what a Character! The Book of Numbers in particular forces us to see God in a decidedly angry mood.
Might God not be regretting, even temporarily, his call to Moses? Imagine God shaking a fist in frustration at the constant bickering and whining among the Israelites. And imagine Moses, worn out with a responsibility he never sought, shaking his fist too. Reading the words out loud can bring those emotions out in the open, undomesticated and raw, and real.
That is what the Bible story, a story about a real God, related to real people, living out real lives, with real feelings. The feelings are not always joyful, or peaceful. The anger Moses and God express in this reading enable every reader to meet the real God, a God who can and does understand the life each of us lives.
