Bible Study ?Joshua

8 of 12 Studies

"The Power of God’s Promises"

Study 8: Joshua 13 ?9..Joshua Divides the Land.

1.  In What one area of your life would you most like to see spiritual progress?

Christians often feel more like captives than conquerors. What hinders our spiritual progress? Why do we sometimes experience so little when we are promised so much? God had proven himself to Israel throughout their many battles. He had promised to be with them in the conquest of Canaan and had kept his promise. Yet in spite of many victories, much of the land remained to be conquered. These chapters look at why Israel had failed to possess all that God had promised.

2.  Read Joshua 13:1-7. The Lord commands Joshua to divide the land even though much of it remains to be conquered. What does that command ?and Joshua’s willingness to obey it ?reveal about the Lord and about Joshua?

3.  Read Joshua 14: 6-15. How is Caleb’s faith just as strong at eighty-five as it had been at forty?

4.  Read Joshua 15: 63, 16:10, 17: 12-13, and 19:47.  God had promised to drive these Canaanites out of the land. Why then do you think Israel had difficulty dislodging them (see also Ex. 23:29-30 and Deut. 7:22-24)?

5.  Read Joshua 17:14-18. How does the attitude of the people of Joseph contrast with that of Caleb?

6.  How does Joshua deal with their complaint?

7.  We sometimes act like the people of Joseph, complaining about how little God has given us when we have not fully used what we have. How do you think Joshua would respond to our complaints and excuses?

8.  Read Joshua 18:1-10. Seven tribes had not yet received their inheritance. What was their problem?

9.  How does Joshua help then to make a fair distribution of the land?

10.  As you look back over these chapters, what reason can you give for why Israel had difficulty taking full possession of the land?

11.  Which reasons help to explain why God’s promises to us are sometimes only partially fulfilled? (For example, his promise to purify our lives of sin.) Explain.

12.  Does your response to God’s promises more closely resemble that of: (a) Caleb (wholehearted faith and obedience)?   (b) the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim (disobedience)?  (c) the people of Joseph (complaints, lack of faith)?   (d) The seven tribes (procrastination)?  Explain your answer.

13.  What can you do to become more like Caleb?

Hi'dy Lisa, good to see you in our Bible Study..that is a great saying-I wrote it down and put it on my fridge.  Well, we are running a little behind on our study, so I'm going to post the summery, and you all can catch up when you can, ok?

Bible Study 8 Summery.

Now, the purpose of Study 8 is to explore why Christians often experience so little when we have bee promised so much.

Question 3. Forty years before Joshua entered the Promise Land, Moses had tried to lead the people into Canaan. However, due to a pessimistic report by an exploration team, the people rebelled and refused to enter. Only two of those original explorers believed that God could give the people the land. They were Caleb and Joshua (Num. 13). At age eighty-five, Caleb still believes that God can strengthen him to do the task, which seem impossible.

Question 4. I didn’t ask you to read every verse in these chapters, since most of them merely described how the land was divided among the various tribes. You may have explored several possible answers to this question. For example, Exodus and Deuteronomy tell us that God had said the conquest of Canaan would not happen all at once. Yet, this does not fully explain Israel’s difficulty. We know that the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim disobeyed God by not destroying the Canaanites as God had commanded (Deut. 20:16-18) but instead allowed then to do forced labor (Josh. 16:10;

17:12-13). Caleb’s outstanding example also raises the question of whether the other tribes had faith in God’s promises. In the remainder of the study we will consider other possible reasons for Israel’s difficulty.

Questions 8-9. The seven tribes were evidently concerned about whether there would be a fair distribution of the land. Not all of the land was of equal size or value, so they wondered which tribes would get the best and which would get the worst areas. Because they didn’t know what to do, they did nothing at all! Joshua’s solution of casting lots assured them that the final decisions would be impartial.

Question 10. Some possible reasons are God’s timing or our lack of faith, disobedience and procrastination.

I've found that when I procrastinate (and I'm bad for it) on things that wouldn't take but a minute to do, it ends up taking more than a minute, if I wait to the last minute...

I will post Study 9 in a couple of days, to give all a chance to catch up...God Bless All. Love Sister Betty

I would like to experience more spiritual progress in my prayer habits.  Our busy lives hinders our spiritual progress in prayer and bible study.  (Haven’t you noticed how far behind I’ve gotten).  <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

I believe one reason we experience so little is like I stated above, our priorities are not as they should be.   Also, we allow to much doubt of what God can do.<o:p></o:p>

When we want a victory in something, we have to Claim it.  We have to put our stake out there.  To claim something we must also see the victory.  In Habakkuk, it says to “write the vision down and make it plain.?SPAN>  So in other words, claim that victory In Jesus Name!  Put a mental picture of it in your mind.

Just as Joshua was old and stricken in age, often times we grow tired in weary in our walk and start stumbling when we think God isn’t working fast enough.  The scripture in Habakkuk concludes that,  “although it may tarry, it will surely come.?SPAN>    We must stay focused on our victory.  If we stay focused on our victory, we will not only win the battle, but we win the war.  And when we have done all that the Lord has required of us, The Lord God of Israel will be our inheritance just as it was Levi Mosses, it was for Joshua, and so it will be for all of us .<o:p></o:p>

I think I fit into all these categories at times: (b) the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim (disobedience)  (c) the people of Joseph (complaints, lack of faith)   (d) The seven tribes (procrastination).  <o:p></o:p>

To become more like Caleb, we need to be in prayer continually.  We need to study the word, continually.  We should not let a day go by that we don’t read the word.  We need to keep our focus on God and do the work of the Lord.  What a Blessing I received last night to help with Vacation Bible School.  The look on those children's faces was worth all the work.  There are so many things whether it be witnessing, helping with charity, helping a neighbor, etc.  Just know that we must remain faithful to the Lord, He will command our Blessings, He will command our Victory.   If we do not remain faithful to God our blessing or victory can be inherited by someone else.  God gives us all the key elements for battle and for victory.  If we do not use all the weapons that God gives us how can we expect a victory!  How can we expect an inheritance!

Good morning Sister Mary.  What a wonderful explaination of faith and victory.  I'm enjoying this study because, not only do we learn from the study guide and scriptures, we learn from each other.  I'm a strong believer in "Name it and Claim it!!" God's word says that we can do that, through faith, and have victory, plus blessings.
We are lucky, that we have the inheritance of our Gober familys' devout Faith in God and the inheritance of God available to us.  All we have to do is stay in His word and obey Him.
Don't worry about getting behind, we all are this time of year, but we must stay in a habit of reading God's word and praying daily, because it is when we get busy, that the devil will move right in to stay...so we have to stay prayed up and read up if we are to have victory over satan when the battle begins.

God bless you and thanks for your responce. Love Cuzz Betty
