Bible Study ?Joshua

11 of 12 Studies

"The Power of God’s Promises"

Study 11: Joshua’s Farewell.

1.  If you were giving a farewell address, what would you most want to say?

Great leaders inspire us to obey God. We depend on their encouragement and their example. But what happens when such leaders are no longer around?   About twenty years elapsed between the end of the war and Joshua’s death. During that time Joshua’s influence kept Israel loyal to God. Now Joshua knows that he is about to die, and he is concerned that Israel’s loyalty to God might not continue in his absence. Therefore, he calls the Israelites together to hear a farewell message of challenge and warning.

2.  Read Joshua 23.   How does Joshua exalt God in his farewell address?

3.  Why is it important for us to recall the Lord’s faithfulness in past events?

4.  In what past events have you been struck by God’s faithfulness?

5.  What promises and commands does Joshua give Israel (vv.5-11)?

6.  What does it mean for us to "hold fast to the LORD" and "to love the LORD" (vv. 8,11)?

7.  Why weren’t the Israelites allowed to associate with the nations around them (vv. 7-8, 12-13)?

8.  Today, what aspects of non-Christian culture can become snares, traps, whips on our backs and thorns in our eyes?

9.  We obviously cannot and should not avoid non-Christians today. How then can we resist the temptation to live like them?

10.  Joshua warns that the Lord is not only faithful to his promises but also to his threats (vv. 14-16). What threats had the Lord made to Israel (vv. 15-16)?

11.  What warnings has the Lord given us as Christians (Acts 20:28-30; Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 5:3-7; Heb. 2:1-4)?

12.  How does Joshua’s farewell address motivate you to be faithful to the Lord?

. Read Joshua 23. How does Joshua exalt God in his farewell address? He reminded them of the great things God had done for them in his days. There might be many things amiss among them, but they had not forsaken the Lord their God;

Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold steadfastly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

3. Why is it important for us to recall the Lord’s faithfulness in past events?

It gives us the assurance that God will take us through to his promise.. “I will never leave or forsake you?he will deliver us again!!

Yes, Yes!! it is by faith that we live for ever!! If we are faithful to God, he will keep his word to deliver us up to the "Promised Land"!!  This has been a really great study..I have truely enjoyed it and learned a lot more than I knew before.

4. In what past events have you been struck by God’s faithfulness?

They are to numerous to post so I pick “One…He stayed faithful when I crumbled under doubt…when Doug  (my husband and childrens father) was dying. Through it all I learned the Full meaning of "I am God! I change Not" He stayed the course..He never wavered..and in times of Storms.. He..Walks the waves.I am reminded of the words Mother use to recite to us kids when we where in a Texas storms and, Tornados..

God moves in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform, He plants His Feet upon the clouds, and He Rides upon the Storms.

Good afternoon all!  It seems to me that these last three chapters in the book of Joshua, the harder it was for me to interpret what the scripture was saying to me.  I believe that alot of that is that I am still so new in the word and I still have a lot to learn.  I think much of what I need to do is go back to the beginning and get in-dept study.

After reading to this point, I may have a slight interpretation of what the book of Joshua is teaching, but this is what I got from chapter 23.

After reading the chapter the first thing that popped into my mind was Joshua himself.  Joshua is now older and years and has obtained much wisdom.  He has showed great leadership.  One thing that I have noticed about Joshua is that even when he has questioned God in the past, he still kept his communication with God.  That is what I see in the elders of my church.  There are members that have been a part of that church for over 50 years!  I remember as a child they would come by my house and pick me and my cousins up for Sunday school.  Now, here I am a member of the church my self and I will never forget these people.  When they were young, they made a commitment to Christ, and even when they questioned God at times, they continued their communion with God and perhaps some of the questions that they had in the past has now been answered because they continued to trust in the Lord.  They were wonderful leaders in our church.  Just as Joshua, they have paved a road that otherwise may have never been paved if it had not been for them.  Now, the flame I feel has been passed onto me and it is my turn now.

LEADERSHIP in our walk with God is so very important.  Go ahead and question God if you feel the need, but never lose communication with him--Continue to seek him for answers.  He will show us the answer.  Through leadership we learn to be good parents, to witness, to learn to trust and many times longsuffering, but they all work for the good and a valuable lessons in our walk with God because one day it will be our turn to pass the torch to someone else.

7. Why weren’t the Israelites allowed to associate with the nations around them (vv. 7-8, 12-13) We are never to socialize…with the unbelievers to our hurt. We are not to be partakers of others sinful ways. (of course we are to love them, wisdom here-k?) we are not to shun them, Jesus Ate with them, and so do I, He loved them, and so do I . But He ‘alone?died for the sinners,,, “of whom I am chief?just as (Paul said) in 1Timothy 1:15. But if They worship other “Gods?I will have nothing to do with them!!

……………………………?...........................................................................................

8. Today, what aspects of non-Christian culture can become snares, traps, whips on our backs and thorns in our eyes?

To days social activities are such that I am concerned for the younger generations, movies, televisions, etc have become a cesspool of unrighteousness. (Matthew 10:14-15)

Plainly states ‘for those who refuse the gospel?..it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for those who refuse the gospel.

9. We obviously cannot and should not avoid non-Christians today. How then can we resist the temptation to live like them?

This one is easy for me…I have been where they are, I want to let my light Shine to them…their darkness is unappealing to me. For me.. it would be like the ‘Dog returning to his own vomit?(Proverbs 26:11) yuk!!

10. Joshua warns that the Lord is not only faithful to his promises but also to his threats (vv. 14-16).

Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the Lord your God promised you; so shall the Lord bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the Lord your God hath given you.

11. What warnings has the Lord given us as Christians (Acts 20:28-30; Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 5:3-7; Heb. 2:1-4)?

In these verse, It is evident that our transgression can forfeit the promise of God to let us dwell in the land of his Promises

6. What does it mean for us to "hold fast to the LORD" and "to love the LORD" (vv. 8,11)? My thoughts are of the woman that pressed through the crowd to touch the hem of his robe. She knew Jesus was her last hope her only hope…every human had failed her. I am holding fast to Him. . Like a Bull Dog who locks his jaw, and will not let go!! I have clenched my Teeth into that hem. I’ll not let go!!

5. What promises and commands does Joshua give Israel (vv.5-11)?

And the Lord your God, he shall expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the Lord your God hath promised unto you.
? ‘Be ye therefore very courageous? ’Turn not aside therefore to the right hand or to the left; …“One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the Lord your God, he it is that fights for you, as he hath promised you.?……There is no earthly reason for believers not to fight the ‘Good fight of faith? as we keep our eyes on Jesus who ‘authorized?us to have Faith…and follow through to the finish> ‘Looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our Faith.’Hebrews, 12.2

……………………………?..................................................................

12. How does Joshua’s farewell address motivate you to be faithful to the Lord?

Joshua had experienced first-hand the victories of obeying God, he fought battles,

Led the armies, marched in and proclaimed the Promise of God.

His farewell address motivates me to do the same…so I will keep marching toward

The goal of all that God has promised me. I have, and ever shall enjoy the sweetness of His (Gods) Milk and Honey the Promise “I will never leave you or forsake you.?

Well Sister's , I have typed this twice!! I took my notes to work with me on Thrusday this past week and after studing and preparing, I typed it in the PC at work.  I was about to upload it into post, when the phone started ringing off the hook, I got so busy that I didn't get it posted, and I saved it to the office PC.  Friday was also busy, end results, I just retyped it on my PC before uploading now, so I'm sure I have missed a lot of what the Lord gave me on Thursday.

Anyway, I will look when I go back on Monday and if there is something gooooood to add I will then, ok?  You both have some very good responces to this chapter and I thank you both for your input, it has helped me learn a lot too.

Summery Study 11. Joshua’s Farewell, Chapter 23 is to remind us of God’s faithfulness and to warn us about the dangers of allegiance to the world.

Question 2. Verse 1 mentions that Joshua was "old and well advanced in years." In 24:29 are told that he was a hundred and ten when he died. I can’t even imagine doing what he did at age 58, much less at 110. I feel that God wasn’t looking at Joshua’s age when he chose him, rather his wisdom and faith.

Question 7. Joshua’s warnings about pagan nations in the land echo Moses?warnings in Exodus 23:33, 34: 12-16 and Deuteronomy 7:16.

Question 10. Israel’s prosperity and continuance in the land was conditioned on their obedience to God’s covenant with them (see Deut. 28: 15-68).

Question 11. Someone may question whether these verses teach that God might take salvation away from a person. Jesus taught, "I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand" (John 10:28). Paul also states the promise; "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Phil. 1: 6.

From verses such as these, we know that once we have been saved, we can never become unsaved. However, this does not mean that Christians are free from all spiritual danger. It also does not mean that those who merely profess Christ without being born again are secure. Perseverance on the part of the believer is the final proof of whether he or she is truly born again.

For a more complete study of this subject, you may want to look up "Eternal Security" or Perseverance of the Saints" in a book on Christian doctrine. I recommend that you do this if, you are having trouble understanding this section of our study, or if you want a more in-depth knowledge of Christian doctrine.

I hope that you are getting a blessing from this study, I sure am, and I will be posting Study 12-our final study of Joshua tomorrow. God Bless All, Sister Betty
