Lord tells us in Matthew 6:16-18 that when we fast, we are to do it unto the Lord. He doesn't say if we fast. "Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly." We can see that our motives in fasting must be pure. We are not to do it in order to broadcast it, but we are to do it as quietly and simply as possible so as not to attract attention to ourselves. We are to appear to others as though we are not fasting. The main thing the Lord desires is that it be done unto Him and not as a show unto men. Our heart attitude must be right to produce spiritual results | |

These words came to me when meditating on the word “Fasting�?/FONT> Submission .... Deny Mt 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Jesus said if we want to follow him we must deny our fleshly desires, and take up our cross and follow him (submission) by denying the flesh we bring it under submission to High calling of God. Next�?.Can you think of other scriptures and/or ways that fasting is Profitable to us? |

(Sis I have to copy these scriptures because I can't set here long enough to put into my own word.) When I fast, God brings to my conscience, things that I have said to someone (that i don't even remember I said) that I should ask their forgiveness. Maybe spoke to harsh or spoke in a teasing way, that hurt their feelings. At that moment I call the person or go see them, to make amends. thats one of the benefits of fasting. I would like to learn more about the sackcloth with ashes to. I don't understand what this means. Es 4:1
¶ When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;
Es 4:2
And came even before the king's gate: for none might enter into the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.
Es 4:3
And in every province, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.
Es 4:4
So Esther's maids and her chamberlains came and told it her. Then was the queen exceedingly grieved; and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him: but he received it not. Es 4:4
v1-4 Mordecai avowed his relation to the Jews. Public calamities, that oppress the church of God, should affect our hearts more than any private affliction, and it is peculiarly distressing to occasion sufferings to others. God will keep those that are exposed to evil by the tenderness of their consciences. |

It is not an essential element in the Christian life, but it is a very valuable one. It helps tame dark horses. The more we are enslaved to our desires, the more distorted our picture of reality - the addict is the living icon of where slavery to desires leads, sick, obsessed, so controlled by heroin, cocaine or alcohol, that the only serious question in life is 'where does the next fix come from?' Fasting is a prophylactic treatment for disordered desires. If desire and fear cloud our sight, fasting clarifies it, and helps us discern the presence, the love and the call of God.
Fasting without prayer is of no spiritual value. Fasting should energise our prayer, cleanse the eyes of the spirit Fasting awakens the spiritual senses so that we become aware of
the One who dwells in this temple. Fasting is warfare - warfare against the roots of weakness and
disorder in our own lives. We are not to judge another's fasting,
only our own.
In the fast our spiritual eyes may be opened -
and we we find ourselves before the throne of the Just Judge -
not a good place for judging others! |

Amen! I agree Averil. Fasting without prayer is only dieting. You lose the flesh weight, but not the weight of the flesh, which is the burden of desire. |
