Feeling Safe in God's Care

Scripture Reading: Psalm 91

Questions

1. When you were a child, what made you feel safe and secure?

2. Read Psalm 91. What image does the psalmist use to describe God's protective care?

3. How does each image affect your feeling of safety?

4. What types of danger are mentioned in the psalm?

What modern-day counterparts might we face?

5. Is the psalmist really promising that nothing bad will happen to those who trust in God? Explain.

6. In Luke 4:10-11 Satan applies the promise of this psalm to Jesus. Yet how do Christ's own experiences cause us to examine the type of protection God offers?

7. What does it mean to make the Most High our dwelling and refuge (v. 9)?

 8. Verses 9-13 speak of God's commanding his angels to guard us. How do you respond to the idea that you have guardian angels?

Have you ever sensed their presense in the midst of danger? Explain.

9. In verses 14-16 the psalmist becomes silent and God speaks. Read these verses to yourself, substituting your name for the pronouns he and him.

How does it make you feel to have the Lord speak to you in that way?

10. What current circumstances make you feel unsafe or vulnerable?

How does this psalm help you to feel safer in God's care?

What types of danger are mentioned in the psalm?

I believe the most "dangerous" (and I say that word very loosely and with a yea right attitude) force that we as humans and Christains have to deal with is that in which we cannot see.  Each time I have a battle with the unseeable the Lord tells me, "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents & scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing by any means shall hurt you."  Luke 10:19.  <o:p></o:p>
Every time that the devil attacks my faith, I simply remind him who is in control and how God has given me the power to send him packing.

I have personally had experiences myself, as well as my husband and all three of my children who have had to deal with evil spirits and/or situations.  The devil is such a coward that he sneaks up behind us in hopes of tripping us up.  But my God promised me angels that when I stumble or am tripped the angels will pick me up.

In Luke 4:10-11 Satan applies the promise of this psalm to Jesus. Yet how do Christ's own experiences cause us to examine the type of protection God offers?

The temptation of Christ was both a testing and a tempting. From the divine point of view, the Holy Spirit arranged a testing to show that Jesus qualified as free from sin. If He were not free from personal sin, He could not bear our sins. For Satan, it was a temptation to see if he could make Christ fall as had the first Adam. The temptation was real, yet it was impossible for God the Son to sin.

Luke 4:9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:

Luke 4:10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:

Luke 4:11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Luke 4:12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Luke 4:13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

As Christians, we have to stay prayed up, because the devil is going to tempt us!! God has given his angels charge over me ( Luke 4:10). when temptation comes along, the Holy Spirit makes me awear of the evil one and my angels guard me and make me feel safe in high places. They (Holy Spirit and Angels) protect me..I know that I am in God's care.

Question 4

What types of danger are mentioned in the psalm?

What modern-day counterparts might we face?

Listen, O daughter, give attention and incline your ear;
Forget your people and your father's house (Psalm 45:10)
.

</DIR></DIR>

The pattern for a marriage is that the bride is to leave her family and be joined to her husband as a part of a new family.

You wouldn't think much of a bride who wanted to keep pictures of her old boyfriends on the mantle.

There is a real danger to living in the past. It is the danger that was seen in the Israelites who were in the wilderness. Every time a trouble came their way, they would think back to the "good old days" of their slavery in Egypt.

How different is the attitude of Paul when he says, ...forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:13-14).

No! Jesus had bad things happen to him-but we must keep

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame.?Heb 12:2

To put it in my words…we are the ‘Victor?before the battle starts. We should enter our life’s battles (not with the battle cry) but with the shout of Victory! Shouting out ?Fall you ‘thousand?at my side! And you ten thousand at my right hand! You can’t come near me! Ps 91:7

Well Glory! Shouting! Glory! This study is getting better and better!

Question 5.

Is the psalmist really promising that nothing bad will happen to those who trust in God? Explain

my Answer

God's protection is for getting us safely to Heaven. Period. For Christ, the central question wasn't "to suffer or not to suffer" but "to love or not to love". That is why he taught us to pray "lead us not into temptation"--temptation both of God and ourselves. For it is temptation, often occasioned by suffering, that imperils love: the temptation to experiment on God like he was a bug ("If you are the Son of God, see if you can get away with this!") and the temptation to think God regards us as bugs when things get really tough ("My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"). Thus, the question for us is not "Will I suffer?" (I will.) The question is: "Will I remain faithful to love, trust and obey God as Christ did when things get bad?"

Joh 16:33
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

It is Written was the answer Jesus gave - he always had the word in his mouth (In fact He is The Word!)

Joh 15:7
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. and many more verses that tell us how we are protected.

In the temptation of our Lord, Psalm 91:11-12 are quoted by Satan to our Lord, at the time of His temptation in wilderness (Matthew 4:6; Luke 4:10-11).

Jesus responded by referring to the Scripture which forbade putting God to the test. There is much more that Jesus could have said, and did not. What Satan would only later learn is that the promise of Psalm 91 was to be fulfilled through the suffering and death of Jesus, on the cross of Calvary. God could promise deliverance to those who trusted in Him because Jesus would suffer in their behalf, and would rise from the dead, the Victor over sin, and death, and Satan. Psalm 91 was not Jesus' excuse for avoiding the cross, but His reason for going to the cross.

Heb 12:2--Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

If we are to walk as Jesus walked, we must keep our eyes on him as we bear our cross, we must endure for the Joy that is set before us. He has authored our faith…He will see us through to the finish!

………?

Many times I have felt their presence in the midst of danger. One that came immediately to my mind was this...

I had my 2 oldest children (when they were just babies) with me driving out on the highway doing about 70mph when all of a sudden I had a blowout on my left front tire, the car went out of control headed for the opposite ditch, I screamed Jesus Help me! The next thing I knew I was sitting with my car in “parked -gear?/FONT>

I was on the right side of the road and well off the main highway. I felt great peace and a presence of something holy sitting in the passenger seat; I did not look for several minutes- for fear that I might crumble at what I would see. I did look back at the kids-they were still sleeping.

When my Mum lay dying she saw angels, she used to tell me how they used to come and just sit and give her a feeling of warmth and peace.  Just before she died she was visited by  Jesus. 10 minutes before her death she sat up and held out her arms  I asked her Mum what is it. Her last words ever to me were. Its alright now Jesus had come, he is here to take me home.

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God [is] faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear [it].
