Bible Study - Lesson 1

"Becoming What God Wants Me to Be"

Study 1: "Finding How I Fit In": 1 Corinthians 12. (Focal: 1 Corinthians 12: 12-14, 18-27. Every Christian has a significant place of service to fill in the life of the church. The purpose of this lesson is to help you identify the significant places of service you will fill or will continue to fill in the life of your church. How do you fit into the Lord’s church? As we study this lesson, ask God: "Lord, how can I continue to serve you?"

Many members in the Corinthian church misunderstood the meaning of spiritual gifts. Paul rebuked them; "Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly ?mere infants in Christ" (1 Cor. 3:1). One of his major reasons for writing the Corinthian letters was to help believers discover and use their gifts. Following are some of those letters.

The Holy Spirit led Paul to instruct the Corinthian church. Concerning, Christian unity (1:10 ?4:21); Dealing with weaker Christians (8:1 ?11:1); Conduct in worship, especially the Lord’s Supper (11:2-34); Spiritual gifts in the church (12:1 -?4:40); The resurrection of Christ and Christians (15:1-58); and an offering for the poor (16:1-4).

But, for now we go back to our main scripture, 1 Corinthian 12…in discussing the gifts of the Spirit, Paul declared; "There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men" (1 Cor. 12:4). In saying this, Paul anticipated the main point is his discussion of spiritual gifts. God has a place for all believers in the church, and He expects each believer to fill his or her place. The Spirit "gives them [gifts] to each one, just as he determines" (v.11).

Comparing the church as the body of Christ to a human body, Paul stressed the unity and diversity of the church. The church is one body with many members (vv.12-26). God has called different members for special ministries and gifts (vv. 27-31). Every person is important in God’s church. If you have received Christ, you also are gifted by His Spirit. He has an important role for you in His church.  I pray this lesson will encourage you as you fill that role.

Ok, Class, read 1 Corinthians 12, then start the discussion when you are ready..We'll see where this takes us.  I want be posting questions like in the first study.  This is an open discussion based on you get from the scriptures.  I'm looking forward to your posts.  God Bless All and this study. Love Sister Betty

Note: I’m taking excerpts form each verse for better clarifications of the subject matter
and to save space.

1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.  3 that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 differences of administrations 6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God, which worketh all in all 7 the Spirit is given to every man to benefit withal.

Note: There are Nine Gifts, 1.the word of wisdom; 2.the word of knowledge; 3.faith 4.healing; 5.working of miracles; 6.prophecy; 7.discerning of spirits; 8.divers kinds of tongues; 9.interpretation of tongues. 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, *dividing to every man severally as *he will. 14 For the body is not one member, but many.

This is how I see the interpretations of ‘The Gifts of The Spirit? (However my interpretations are not written in Stone) for right now we “all see through the glass darkly?1Cor 13:12

In verse 7. It is clear why these gifts are given, (to benefit) every man. (In the body of Christ)

In verse 11.it is also clear that it is ‘The Spirit?that makes the decisions as to ‘whom?each gift will operate, “dividing to every man severally as He Will?each one of the Gifts are necessary for the body of Christ (the church) to operate. They are not our own individual gifts. I have heard many people boast of themselves ?I have the Gift of Prophecy?or “I have the Gift of Healing?etc, as though they have been given something special above the others in the church. While it is ‘True?that a person may be elected, by (The Spirit) for one gift to operate through more often than another person, it by no means indicates that, that selfsame Gift, will not operate in any member of the church, be it the Pastor or the layman, be it man or woman. >> To be continued, (this is getting to long) will post later.

(Copied from my last post) While it is ‘True?that a person may be elected, by (The Spirit) for one gift to operate through more often than another person, it by no means indicates that, that selfsame Gift, will not operate in any member of the church, be it the Pastor or the layman, be it man or woman.) >> Continuing.. >>for you see the Spirit operates as He (The Holy Spirit) sees fit. However if none of these gifts operate frequently in your life it does not mean that you don’t play an important part. Verse 13.for we all where baptized into one body, and all of us drink into One Spirit. Verse 14. For the body is not one member, but many.

In verses 15-24 it is clear to me that all of the gifts operate in Love, and without respect of persons (God is no respecter of persons: Acts 10:34) we all have been given the gift of Love and a measure of faith (by the way.. The measure of faith that you have been given is enough to move mountains) God does not give a poor measure of anything!! But it is up to us to allow our full measure of faith to operate)              Getting back to the subject of “How do I fit in?well it is clear that we are never to think of ourselves “more highly than we ought to think?Rom 12:3.) But we also, are never to think of ourselves as useless to the body of Christ, for it was He that paid a great price for all of us, and we are of great value to Him.  Verse15. If the foot says I am not the hand, so I am not of the body; is it therefore not the body? Verse 18. God set every one of the members in the body, as it pleased Him. As you know the Chapter starts out in verse,1. Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.) As you read closely you see that Paul is teaching not only how we ought to behave in the Church building, but as the body of Christ, which is made up of all of us. Verse 28. God has set in the ‘church?building?nbsp;   First apostles, 2. Prophets, 3. Teachers, 4. Miracles, 5. Then gifts of healings, 6. Helps 7.governments, 8.diversities of tongues. Notice that God set the gifts in the church in order 1-8, because Paul uses such words as, first, secondarily, thirdly, etc. and he was teaching them that, each had a proper place in the church, as ordained by God. Verse’s 29-30 clearly points this out. This was to stop all of the brag and boast that was going on in the ‘church building?among the body of Christ.

Verse 31, and also verse 1-2 of next chapter (13) puts it All in The Nut-Shell. (So to speak) if we had the ability to do All of the Above; and yet not LOVE. We are nothing.      How do I Fit in?     I am the clay, He is the potter, molding me, making me, and keeping me.. A vessel Fit for His use.    He allows the Gifts to operate in my life. They operate Freely as the Holy Spirit wills. I have been given all that I need by the Holy Spirit, to jointly ‘Fit In The Body of Christ.?To God be the Glory!! Amen.    Redda

This is wonderfully stated Sister Redda and explained in such a way that it is easy to see that it does take us all to make up the body of Christ (the church), and what makes this body function are the 9 gifts, as are assigned, to each his measure, as you said.  Thank You Sis

Preston (livin'for christ) Honey, you did fine with your input to this study, and you will be able to express your thoughts more as you grow in your faith. So please don't be , to speak up, and if there is anything that you have questions about, please feel free to ask. Some of us will answer your questions, ok?  that is what Bible study is for. We all had to crowl before we walked (so-to-speak) and matured.
I'm happy that you are interested enough to join this study and learn the word of God with us.  Thank You, Love Sister Betty

Thank You Sister Faith for the encouraging words. God knows I need all the encouragement I can get, with this study.  It is with a heart full of LOVE that I ask you to forgive me for removing your web link from your post, I feel that we need to keep our minds in 'one accord' for this study.  Being the seasoned Pastor, with many years as a servant of God that your are, I know you understand why I say this.  With that in mind, I'ed love to hear your thoughts on this study, I'm sure you would be a beacon of light.
Thanks again for the uplifting words. God Bless, Love in Christ Jesus, Your Friend Sister Betty.

Hello Everyone:  Sorry that I haven't been around lately, but I know you all understand.  I have been reading some of the postings and keeping up, but just haven't posted lately.   When I study this Chapter I am reminded of the Bible Story of the different talents.  Each of us has a purpose in life and what we do in our life.  We are to use our God-given talents.  If we don't we cannot grow, nor could a church grow.  Each of us has a calling in our work for the Lord and in our work he rewards us each differently, but not one is rewarded with any lesser value.

Psalms 8:4-5

What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

God has made us all equal in his eyes.  He love of us the same, and wow, he made us a little lower than the Angels.  By this, it does not matter whether you are the President of the United States or a begger on the street, you are equal and our status whether it be high or low does not matter to our Lord in Heaven.  What matters is not how many talents we have, or how we used them--What matters is that we use them.  Some of us are musically inclined.  Some can play, some can sing, and some are very creative, and although we may not possess the talents that someone else has, we have to use what God has given us.

Jealousy and envy can cause a Church to fall and bring hatred into our own hearts, So be proud of what God has given you and don't be envious of what God may have given someone else, because no matter what we have, or how many we have, use it to glorify God.

Where Do I Fit In?

8-27-02

My comments are on the "Basic Commonality" of the christians...what I get from 1Cor. 12: 12-13,,with reference to other scriptures.

Christians have much in common. In the New Testament "common" usually means "that which is shared" Acts 2:44 says.."And all that believed were together, and had all things common;" Act 4:32?/STRONG>"And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common." The word "Common" is closely related to the word "Fellowship." So, as Christians we are to share and fellowship with other Christians.

Christians share the same Father, the same Savior, the same Holy Spirit, the same salvation, the same direction, the same revelation from God’s Word, the same body of Christ, and the same destination. Of this commonality John wrote: "If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship [a common, shared life] with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies ["cleanseth,"KJV] us from all sin" (1 John 1:7).

The church as the body of Christ is made up of many parts (v.12). We become a part of Christ’s body by being "baptized by one Spirit in to one body" (v.13). This spiritual baptism takes place the instant we receive Jesus as Savior. To baptize means, "to dip, plunge, or immerse." Water baptism is a symbol of what occurred when the Holy Spirit saved the believer and placed him or her into Christ’s body. At the same time, the Lord gave the believer "one Spirit to drink" (v.13). This indicates to me, a simultaneous action in which the Spirit puts us into Christ and Christ puts His Spirit into us. The Lord makes no difference between any of us (v.13). Whoever receives Christ becomes part of His spiritual body. Because of our common bond, no one is any better than anyone else; but all share the privileges and responsibilities of being part of Christ’s body.

To express our unity in Christ, we bind our hearts in Christian love and fellowship. We should ask ourselves "what are we doing to extend the love of Christ to others and magnify the basic commonality we share in Christ and His church?" We should ask the Lord how He would have us to reach out to include others in His circle of love.

This is kind of long, but that is what I get from these two verses (12: 12-13).

Just to let you know I am really enjoying this study. We all need to know where we fit in.  In Gods family we all have a purpose. No person is left out unless they choose to be. God has a wonderful plan for each of His people. Even though we aren't all the same, and it is a good thing we are not, we all have something in common. That is the bond we share through Jesus. The gifts vary from person to person, but many can be quite simalar, but each have their own purpose for their own time. 2 people can share the gift of prophesy, , but different things can be exposed to different needs. Some can be extremely gifted in the area of cleaniness and to God it is just as important as one who has the gift of  prophesy.Thank you for making things so much clearer for those who don't and can't understand their worth .

Hello Everyone. For some reason, unknown to me and our Asst. Manager’s. there are 4 Bible Study messages missing from lesson 1. I noticed this a couple of weeks ago when I was recapping (reading all posts) to see where I needed to start the next Study. It could have happened by MSN making changes. I’m sorry that the messages are missing, for whatever the reason. However, these messages are not lost, PTL!! Because I print out all the Bible Study messages so that I can refer to them offline. I will have to re-type them, but at least we will have them, and I feel they are vital to this Study. These message were posted by; Redda, Averil52 and myself. If you ladies have these messages saved to your PC, feel free to check this post to your copies.

From: Redda Message#3 of 5 posted 8/28/02 7:25pm

From: Redda                     Message#5 of 5 posted 8/29/02 1:01am

I will start by saying that I believe in the ‘full operation of the Holy spirit? I believe all of the 9 gifts (listed in 1 Corinthains 12) of the ‘Holy Spirit?are alive and well today in the ‘Body of Christ? I also know that 1 Corinthians 12, is one of the most debatable chapters in the bible, because of ‘different doctrines?among men.

There is no way we can study in ? Corinthians 12?with out touching on this subject. (That is what the chapter is all about) “Instruction concerning Spiritual Gifts? since the ‘Focal?is “Finding How I Fit in?

Let us proceed with love in our hearts..as each persons ’view point?may vary. We are here to fellowship in Love and understanding..not to debate ’Doctrinal differences?

I am putting together my ’Commentary?on the subject (Finding How I Fit In) and will post it soon, but I felt led of the Lord to post this..because I want each participant to feel free to join-in our ’Bible Study?without fear of discord, and/or rebuke. Let us proceed with our study..k?

Love in Christ…Redda.

From: Averil52              Message#6 of 6 posted 8/30/02 12:54 am.

Spiritual gifts are a divine, supernaturally ability given by god at the moment of salvation to every individual believer without merit which enables him/her to serve and to minister with ease and effectiveness. Each believer receives a primary gift as a permanent possession which motivates and facilitates his/her service.

This primary gift compliments those talents and abilities with which God equipped us as He formed us in the womb At my natural birth God gave me certain talents and abilities which compliment those spiritual gifts that He in time would give me.

At my spiritual birth, God’s gift enabled me to discern spiritual truths from His word and to express those truths to others.

Each believer has received at least one gift (1 peter 4;10). In every church there will be gifts that differ (Romans 12:4-6a) because all believer are not given the same gift (1 Corinthians 12:29-30).

Spiritual gifts differ from the fruit of the Spirit. The fruit of the spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control - should be evident in all believers and all times. But all believers will not exhibit all gifts at all times. Just as the natural talents and abilities given at our physical birth, these fruits of the spirit compliment the spiritual gift making it more effective.

God the Father appoints the gifts (1 Corinthians 12:28), God the Son gives the gifts (Ephesians 4:7,11a) through God the Holy Spirit Who distributes the gifts (1 Corinthians 12: 4-11). Though there are a variety of gifts, they come through the same Spirit; though there are a variety of ministries or services in the church which gifted believers perform, they are under the direction of the same Lord, and though there will be a variety of effects from gifted believers performing their ministries, there is the same God who is sovereign over all (1 Corinthians 12:4-6).

The spiritual gifts are given for the common good off the church (1 Corinthians 12:7) so that God’s people can be equipped for the work of service which will build up the body of Christ, the church (Ephesians 4:12) and bring glory to God through Jesus Christ (1 Peter 4: 10-11).

(This concludes the missing posted messages..the study picks-up with message 7 of  21).
