well i dont think i have ever told this story to anyone. and i guess i should tell about the day "grandad slim died" it was a hot summer day in 1969, i was 11 yrs old. my mother shirley and dad ray had went to visit memaw and grandad slim. during the course of the visit it was decided that i woud stay for a few days for a visit. my mom and dad, david, sandra and roger left. it was about nite time and memaw and i and grandad slim was getting ready for beb and memaw showed me a bottomed out chair with "what looked liked a stew pot" under it in the kicthen and she said that was where we went to the bathroom in the nite because we didnt go out side at nite because there was BIG CAT around there and they could get me and carry me off and eat me! WELL, i wanted to call my mother right then, but wouldnt you know it there was "NO TELEPHONE!!" O MY GOSH, WAIT NO ONE TOLD ME I WAS GOING TO BE RUFFING IT THE WHOLE TIME I WAS THERE!!! and that a BIG CAT COULD EAT ME!! MAMA!!! i want to go home!! but i was there for the duration!! no contact with the out side world, what was i gonna do? and i was going to have to use the bathroom in a chair with her STEW POT under it.... well no only was going to have to hold it all nite but iam not eating any of her stew anymore!!! and because of the lack of information on my mothers part i wasnt going to give very hard learned informatoin like that to anyone, they would have to learn it all for them selves, thank you very much!! no more over nite stays or any stew for my thank you very much!! any way memaw and i would stay up all nite playing double solitare, and eating great snacks, in her bed, while grandad silm snored all nite. we did this for a few days and one day memaw and i got up to fix lunch for grandad silm,  i dont remember what it was but it was going to be good, just about then grandad came in , it was very hot that day. and he looked pale but at the same time he was red in the face, o i remember he came in early too, memaw said do you want a coke to drink and he said yes. when she went in to the kitchen to get it he said to me linda, i dont feel good, while taking off his what use to be a white cowboy hat, and whiping the swet off his face. then just then he droped his hat in the floor. then he went stiff and straight as a board and slid out of his recliner into the floor. the color went out of his face. i screamed memaw... grandad,! and she came running. i guess she could tell something was wrong by the way i sounded. she came in the livingroom and yelled... SILM! we went to him and i could tell then he was gone that quick!! my grandad silm had gone right then in front of me. i said memaw hes gone!! she said go to the neighbors and call for an ambulance. i thought o no memaw no i cant because the neighbor had a mean goat and would try to hurt me when i went there. but i didnt say anyhting i just went. and half way there i noticed i didnt have my shoes on and the ground was those white sharp rocks, and my feet was bleeding, but i didnt stop. when i got to the neighbors house, there waiting for me at the gate was that MEAN OLD GOAT!! he had seen me coming all the way, and was waiting when i got there. well i looked him in the eye and said you mean old goat you wont hurt or stop me today! i pushed the gate open and knocked him out of the way and knocked on the door and told them what had happened and they called the ambulance. i went back to the house with the neighbor
and waited for them. i knew he was gone and so did memaw. we just waited. when they got there, memaw said linda you get up here with me. so i rode all the way into town in her lap while she cryed, and me too. then i remember my mother getting there and then all i remember is the funeral, and everybody that was there.
i loved grandad silm. he was a good man, and a good grandad even if he wasnt mine. in my heart he was mine!

Yes, Daddy Slim was a good man and a Big Cowboy!!  He had been out riding the fences and got too hot. I know this was hard on you.  You were a brave little girl that day, and Jesus was right there with you.  Thanks for posting this in "a tribute to Grandma" page,,we need more of the grandkids to come post their stories. God Bless, we love you Linda. Aunt Betty
