1 Peter 3:13 - 4:6. Baptism...now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God...through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The waters of baptism are the waters of Christ's death and resurrection. As water brings both death and life, so, through baptism, we become part of Christ in his death that we may be raised with Him to new life through his resurrection (This is why it is called 'A watery grave', by some).. As Peter says in this Epistle, baptism has not to do with washing or making ourselves clean, for this we shall never be able to do. Baptism is the gate way to life in Christ and eternal life here and now and for evermore.
Years ago, long before the Book of Common Prayer 1979 and the appropriately important place it assigns to baptism and Baptismal Covenant, I remember a profound conversation with a dear friend who was wrestling seriously and openly with his vocation and how to live out the life he had been given by God. His final statement was, "Rest assured of one thing. I remember my baptism." And so it is for us all,, We never forget the day we were Baptized!
Almighty God, by our baptism into death and resurrection of You son Jesus Christ, You turn us from the old life of sin: Grant that we, being reborn to new life in Him, may live in rightousness and holiness all our days. Amen.
