Porch Sitting

Back to the days of peace and contentment, memorys
flood my mind as I go back to the days of my youth.Living with Hala, my name for granny. Was  plesant times of porch sitting and music and board games. Homemade ice cream and joy. I was indeed blessed! I think even then I knew that to be true. Hala's porch was a simple wood plank deck and one swing that she and I would set on and listen to the sounds fo the night. Bobwhites would call out in the darkness and the fireflys would light up the yard with an aray of lights that seemed to dance to the beat of the night. One by one our kin would walk up with laterns and add one more to the porch. Uncle porter would say Mother it is a nice evening to night. Hala would just node her head and smile as she continued to swing and take in the bliss of the moment. Then the music would start to play as more of my consins would come by after chores were done and alast they could rest..We could see them comming down the hill to the house. Me and donnie my cosin would run and play in the yard trying to catch the fireflys in mason jars Hala gave us.  Folk music echoed against the night and gave us all an assurance of the masters hands. God was not just someone we talked with on sundays. He was present in our lifes every day every hour. And the Love of God was passed on to the next genaration as a normal presesions of traditions passed on from one genaration to the next.
Porch sitting is tradition, and even now with the fast pace life we have today. We need porch sitting. We need to rest and drink in the beauty of our God's creation. So take some time today and set out on your porch. Live in the moment and let your mind drift back to a time that spoke peace to your heart.

Making home made ice-cream. Swatting Texas mosquitoes.

Playing tag with Tipy (our dog)

Mother rocking…all singing ,old gospel songs.

Waiting for the Texas heat to subside so we could all go to bed.

Playing ‘leap frog?(bubba cheated) he would leap out of turn.

Ok, those were yesterday’s memories. But so much fun to recall.

I recall many front porches of my youth and the Saturday nights that my entire family spent on those porches. To my family, the front porch was their stage. Gathering together on Saturday nights, with guitars, amplifiers, microphrones, beautiful voices and plenty of us kids...to play musicThe adults would sing everything from the newest country tune to the old gospel songs. Sometimes in the middle of a song, meme would just start singing whatever gospel song she felt like at the moment. The music was loud and everyone took a turn. The kids would all run around in the yard playing chase, spot light and I spy. When we got too loud, the adults would yell "be quiet, I can't even hear myself sing" Every once in a while a song we liked would be played, we would stop and just watch the adults perform. I thought they looked and sounded just like the ones I had seen on the Grand Ole Opry. When the kids got tired, we'd lay down on a quilt and fall to sleep to the music. I thought Bubba was Bobby Bear and we just called him bubba, something the rest of the world just didn't know. I can hear my mother singing "You ain't woman enough" and remember she did it as well as Loretta. I can picture in my mind Aunt Sue and Aunt Redda taking their turn. I wouldn't take anything for all those wonderful memories that my family gave me.  There is a saying: A person never really knows where they are going, unless they fully understand where they came from. I am so proud to have come from one of those front porches in west Texas. I love you all!!!

Memories, Oh Sweet Memories To Share
To Staarlight, Earthangel 1, Redda, And Snookie -- I tell you now!!!!Each one of your stories of your childhood memories brought to my recall of how it was in those days of my own childhood years all the way up to the present days of these latter years. Oh what joy and what bliss to think of those childhood memories!!!!They bring comfort and joy to me through troubling times.
One of my greatest memories is of how my mom and dad took us to church almost everytime the doors opened for the sweet fellowship with friends, family, and Jesus our Lord. If it had not been for my mom and dad taking care of that task which is given to parents, I know that my life would not be as pleasant as it is at this time in my life!!!!
And then there was''My Sweet Grannie.'' My Grannie was so much fun to be with!! She took me for lots of walks, baked lots of tea cookies, and always had something funny to say!! It was like going on an adventure when I went to visit her for she had doodlebugs, she had lots of trees, she had honeysuckle where the hummingbirds flocked in herds!! Hehehe!! Those hummingbirds fascinated me so much that I would just stand right there at the honeysuckle and watch and be ever so still and quiet!!! And one day I finally got nervy enough to try and catch one.
Well, I did!! But not for long!!
And then the other memories fall into line such as so many of the same ones that you all have; For, I also got the priviledge of enjoying porch-sitting, family singings, and swatting Texas mosqitoes!!!! I also come from a family who loves music, and as we would sit and stand around to sing the sweet gospel hymns, the country tear-jerkers, some old-time-rock-in-roll, and whatever else came into our hearts and souls, we would look at each other and smile with our faces all aglow; yet, somehow have tears in our eyes as one certain song might tug and pull on a heartstring.
It amazes me how very close all of our memories are as children even though some of us are not blood related. I can just see so clearly each and every one of you as children just as if I had been right there amongst you all. I am so happy to call each one of you a part of my family, and I love you all!!
Sue, I am waiting for your memories!! You have contributed to making a lot of good memories for me since I became a part of this family almost eleven years ago!! I love you!!
