Many or some of us here at HofH have heard about and are following the Canadian Heroin Trials Project called 'The Naomi Project..aka..The North American Opiate Medication Initiative,' is a two year study where 2 groups of addicts will be followed in one of 3 Canadian cities, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouover. One group will be put on methadone the other group on heroin..with up to 3 times a sday option of shooting it or however they choose to ingest the heroin.

Naturally this is a 'shit hit the fan' kinda project..raising all kinds of protests from Canadians and Americans alike. Here is some information for those interested. A video is available for viewing too.

Enrollment:

The NAOMI clinical trial is now enrolling volunteers at its site in Vancouver, British Columbia. Montreal (Quebec) and Toronto (Ontario) sites will begin enrolling later this year. Please watch this web site for further details.

Vancouver Enrollment

Enrolment will be done gradually over six to nine months, beginning Feb.10.

You may be eligible for the Vancouver study if you:

  • Have been addicted to heroin, dilaudid or another opiate for five years;
  • Have been injecting opiates for the past year;

I personally think any decriminalization of illegal drugs would go a long way in addressing the fallout dope leaves in its wake.

WOw Sha, thanx for that.   Damn, I sure wish I lived in Canada, I'd volunteer!

Yes, I agree, legalization of these drugs wouldn't change anything EXCEPT the crime.
Sure we'd still have the addicts, but without the crime some commit to get their drugs.

AND just think how empty our jails would be!    I read somewhere that the female population in jails were something like 85%.............maybe more.  That, to me, is amazing.

luv,
sue

They're still taking applicants here in Montreal from what I understand. On the street it's very hush hush..the people going for the heroin must go 3 times a day..it's in the downtown area. Sounds a little much..3 times a day..wait till the winter gets here..lol. But we get/got through anything for our dope before so this should be a piece of cake. I guess they're going by the length of time the studies says heroin lasts in the system. Which seems to be about 4-5 hours. I dn't know if I'd want to do 3 hits a day.

Thinking of calling just to get some information on it.

Know one couple that were accepted..will let you know what they say if anything.

Sha,  I heard about these trials a while ago, and I don't know quite how to think about this.
I would really be interested to know how things turn out in the end.
If you hear any more,  I would love to hear about it,  OK??  Much Love Karen

Hi all,

A friend of mine is a nurse at NAOMI, and she speaks really positively about it. Apparently they are having a hard time finding enough clients, I think because they are so careful about the selection process because they want to be sure to "do no harm." Personally, I think this is fantastic, and long over due. Especially because the clients are long time users, who are all residence of the downtown eastside area (skid row), and have all failed at other treatments. (I work a couple of blocks away from the site of the project). It offers some relief for people who otherwise don't have any options. A lot of people are really against this initiative, but I think it's usually lack of information coupled with moralism that fuels this.

Anyways, I'll post if I hear anything more.
