This thread is to ask opinions on new electronics. If you need anything that plugs in...ask and we will give you our opinions on electronics that we think might be just what you're looking for.

Thanks so much for the opinions.  I thought Dell was probably the best.  Will keep all this in mind!!

Hugs, Rhonda

PS - not sure if I have the patience anymore to build my own...but I'll seriously think about it!!

Brent -- Well, you know... little boys and old farty women don't usually have the same capabilities.  Not that you're an old farty woman, Rhonda !!!  lol ... But I sure am.  Anyway...

Rhonda -- Just to reiterate what Brent said about emachines.  There was a survey done with a p.c. magazine -- can't remember which one -- and they discovered (much to their own surprise) that the most satisifed customers were the ones who bought the emachines!!  And they're extremely affordable.  Just something to think about.

I know this is the "I need a new ...." thread but actually, I don't need anything.  I didn't know where to put this.  Just wanted to tell you that I finally caved in and bought myself a new camera.  Haven't gotten it yet ... I bought it online last night from www.buydig.com because they had the lowest price on the internet and they're well-respected.  It's the Kodak DX 7440 and I got it for $255.  I also added a 256MB digital card with it.  They had a little accessory kit that you could buy with the DX7440 and I decided to buy it ... it comes with a 256MB card, a carrying case and a cleaning kit.  I know, I know, not that exciting, and probably over-priced, but it was so convenient to just get everything at the same time.  And I compared that to amazon.com, where the camera was $285, plus they would have charged me almost $13 in shipping and handling, plus the camera itself would be shipped from Circuit City (!???) (oy), plus the digital card that I wanted would be coming from J&R in New York (and then I would have had to pay TAXES), plus the carrying case that I wanted (which was cheap), they didn't have in stock!!! and the one they did have in stock was about $23.  So I said to myself, SELF:  just get the camera from buydig.com.  They have a good rep and I got everything I needed for a total of $315, no S&H and no taxes.  I just have to wait a little longer to get the camera because they celebrate the Jewish holidays and they're closed until Sunday.

Sooooo ... here's a picture of the camera.  It's the

Kodak EasyShare DX7440 4MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom

The thing that finally sold me on buying this particular camera is that I read that it has a fast shutter speed and I was getting frustrated with trying to take photos of my nephew and he would be somewhere else by the time the flash went off.  Plus, I'm gonna have 4x Optical Zoom!!  That's after having a dinky little digital camera that had no optical zoom.  So that should be fun.

You know what finally got me motivated to buy a new camera?  I was looking at my Central Park photos and I was kind of impressed with how great they were, if I must say so myself.  Every time I would click on a file, I would say, "I took that??"  haha.  So then I got this urge to start taking photos again, but I knew I needed a nice camera, not that silly little Olympus D-100 that has no power.

Anyway, I'm psyched.  And I don't feel like I broke the bank either, you know?

Yee-Haaa!

P.S.  I just noticed in amazon that you can buy the camera from them, but it actually could be coming from either Circuit City, J&R or Tiger Direct.  And each one of them has a different price.  So I just noticed that J&R actually has a lower price for the DX7440 than Circuit City.  J&R's price is about $270 for the camera (but still doesn't qualify for free shipping).  I wonder why amazon is doing it this way?  And it's so confusing -- you don't know whether you're getting the best price or not.  Plus, if I bought both the camera and the digital card from J&R, which is a New York-based store, I would end up with both shipping and handling AND taxes.  The whole point for me to buy things online is to try to get FREE SHIPPING and not to pay taxes.  If wanted to pay taxes, I could walk 3 blocks to Circuit City and buy the camera today.

Brent -- I don't know if this will get to you, but I'll give it a shot anyway.

My brother's 50th birthday is coming up at the end of July and I told my sister-in-law that I wanted to buy him a digital camera for his birthday, but that I wanted to spend no more than $300.

She asked some "experts" at her job and they insisted that to get the BEST camera, one must have 5MPs so that's what she thinks I should buy (I couldn't seem to convince her otherwise).  They also know that my brother is an artist -- also a graphic artist, who uses a Mac -- and so they mentioned that Canon and Olympus were two good brands to use with PhotoShop (at least that's what I think they said).  Soooooo... anyway.... they're recommending either Canon or Olympus and I think my SIL has her heart set on a Canon Powershot camera and I was wondering what you thought was the best Canon Powershot with 5 Megapixels.  Any recommendations?  I'd like it to be $300 or under.

Thanks.

Hi-Def Rulz!!!!

That being said I'll give a little of my experience and let you make your own conclusion.

3 choices: DLP, LCD and Plasma. DLP is not a flat screen but are thin compared to older rear projection TV's. I believe that DLP has the best picture  (and the cheapest price) but runs on  a bulb that needs to be replaced much sooner than replacing LCD or Plasma. LCD is better in highly lit rooms or where sunlight may reflect off the screen. Plasma has a highly reflective surface. If you are going to double the use of your TV as a computer monitor (very popular) then Plasma is a no-no. Plasma has a better ability to reproduce black therefore better contrast which some claim is instantly a better picture. Plasma screens are very fragile, if you're planning on having hung on a wall I highly recommend having it installed professionally. LCD's are much ligher and usually don't need reinforcing in most walls, just about anyone can hang an LCD without having to worry about damaging it. LCD has a longer lifespan. LCD (at least in cheaper models) can blur when watching fast paced action (like football or auto racing, although it is less noticable in newer models. When looking at hi-def TVs ask (or look for) the display's response time measured in ms. The lower the better. Some say that Plasma can display analog (standard resolution) channels better. OLED is the newest technology and most say it is alot better than Plasma but it comes with a higher price tag. When buying they say you can get a plasma for less than a comparable size LCD.

Now if I haven't confused you yet I promise I will now....the screen resolution debate. To be considered hi-def the screen resolution has to be at least 720p (the p stands for pixels) There are some lower priced TVs  that are Enhanced Definition TV and they are usually 720i or interlaced, you don't want this. Most plasmas and LCD's do either 1080i or 1080p with the higher pixel count 1080p can theoretically have a more detailed picture. The caveat on this is even when  the broadcasts (OTA or over the air) go to hi-def they will be broadcasting 1080i which is the same thing that digital cable and satelite is broadcast at. When you buy a high def TV you will also want to consider an inexpensive DVD player than can "upconvert" to 1080i. I have seen the Samsung and Sony players at about $70. The reason for this is that if you watch a lot of DVD's and you use a standard def player the picture looks horrid, at least it did on mine. The next big warning is to hook up most hi-def devices you would use an HDMI cable. From some stores you can be charged up to $100 for a 6ft cable. Shop this hard because I found some at a Big Lots store for $11.

To give my recommendation...I would go 1080p to futureproof your purchase. There are players that can do 1080p but there is a format war (google hd-dvd vs. blu-ray) going on and no one is sure who will win and most of the players are very expensive...some still at $1000 although HD-DVD have some around $300 and Blu-Ray around $500. I did a lot of research before buying mine about 9 months ago and I chose a Sharp Aqous 37" 1080p LCD. I bought a little smaller for my bedroom and am looking for a 50" or 56" for my living room but probably won't buy one until after the new year because my wife says that my standard def 50" Mitsubishi picture is still good....lol....women, geez...lol

Almost forgot....if you can find one with a cable card (you rent them like a set top box) slot it makes it much easier and no cables to run!!

Great little device. I almost bought one but found more gigabites for my dollar in the iPod Classic.....80 GB vs 8GB for about the same price. Touch interface is nice but not worth the extra $$ IMHO.

It looks like a cool toy... how do you get the internet on it?  Do you have to buy a subscription to their services?  Is there any comparable non-Apple gadget?

It doesn't do Internet. You sync it with the PC. iTunes is the software and there is alot of free stuff out there. But most ppl use a sharing site like bittorrent to pirate music.
