Extract from "Diet For A New You"

Power of Choice

By empowering ourselves with the realization that our life is a series of choices we make, we are freeing ourselves from the constraints of dependency on our overweight selves.

You need to fix firmly in your mind, the fact that we are our own islands among islands, in this wide and wonderful stream of life. We choose to exist alone or we choose to live fully with all of the benefits we can acquire of life, including health.

Weight Loss is Yours

Weight loss is yours if you desire it. You must want to lose weight, more than you want to be fat. Our choices sit on a scale, which slides back and forth depending on the intensity of our desires...the focus of our will.

You must be willing to change your lifestyle to acquire your desire. That is a small price to pay for the joys of clothes shopping, slow comfortable yoga stretches, a vibrant sex life and the flush of good health. A very small price indeed, for all the benefits that a healthy weight has to offer.

All that is required from you is a commitment. Not to me or your spouse or kids. The commitment is to you. You must make a commitment to your own health and take steps to improve it. If you don’t do this for YOU, then you will remain overweight. It's pretty simple.

Please repeat this loudly -

If I don't do this for ME, then who will?
I MUST take responsibility!

Peter Jackson Weight Loss Secret? Skull Island Diet
What is the Peter Jackson weight loss secret? The image most of us have of the Lord of the Rings movie maker is a portly, bespectacled figure reminiscent of one of his Hobbit characters.

New Weight Loss Solution--How to Make Your Diet Work
Statistically, two out of three dieters (roughly 68%) experience weight regain, which is gaining weight immediately after stopping a diet (in some cases during dieting). Weight regain posses a significant health risk to dieters because it initiates weight cycling, or the Yo-Yo Diet.

Weight Loss Tips!
All throughout my childhood and teenage years I watched helplessly as my mother tried every fad diet under the sun. I recall one time she ate boiled cabbage and nothing else for a whole week. I felt my mothers’ frustration and misery but I could not understand why it was so difficult for her to lose weight and keep it off ...

Good Night, Sleep Tight!
One of the most important things you can do for fat loss, controlling weight gain and for overall health is often overlooked. MORE SLEEP! Yes, you actually need to sleep more to gain less!

Dieting Dead Ends
We all run into the brick walls of dieting. We all feel the frustration of facing yet another salad. The most important thing to keep in mind is the necessity for focus and refreshing. Just as you refresh your computer screen, you must refresh your interest and reasons for wanting to lose weight.

Are Weight Loss Supplements Right For You?
The debate about whether supplements for weight loss are healthy or not will go on and on for years to come. There are good and bad points to using weight loss supplements. One of the bad points is that once you stop taking them you gain everything back that you lost to begin with.

Copying Neecey's Tips here For us all.

Hi everyone, okay this has been my first day and it was a bit hard as I went out to lunch. I tried to be good and ordered a small meal with a salad, so not too bad. Here are some tips for measuring, measure these areas: waist, hips, thighs, upper arm and chest. Always measure in the same area and on the same side e.g same arm and measure at least every two weeks (sometimes you might not lose weight because you have gained muscle mass, so measuring once every two weeks gives a better overall picture). Try and weigh only once a week on every Sunday (don't weigh more than that because weight fluctuates constantly).

This is from Opra Winfrey's weight loss doctors...
I had heard of the "No white food" diet before --
--------------------------------------------------------------------

The first step to getting on the path to better eating is to take stock of your pantry! Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen say there are five ingredients that should be banned from your diet forever.

The first ingredient to avoid is hydrogenated oil, which often masquerades as partially hydrogenated oil. Dr. Roizen says we should also eliminate sugar and high fructose corn syrup from our foods. "We eat 63 pounds of [high fructose corn syrup] a year, which puts 33 pounds on the typical American," he says.

Enriched flour is the fourth ingredient to avoid. "[Enriched] means they took all the good stuff out and put a little back," Dr. Roizen says. In 1960, Americans didn't use enriched flour, but today we consume 63 pounds a year, he says.

The fifth offenders are white foods—including bleached flour. The only white items you should have in your fridge are egg whites, cauliflower and fish, Dr. Roizen says.

Your favorite snack foods won't advertise their artificial ingredients—Oprah's medical experts say you have to read the small print for yourself!

Supermarket Secrets Revealed.

After you've read the ingredients on the label, check out how much saturated fat and sugar is in your food. Dr. Roizen says you want to buy foods that contain less than four grams of saturated fat and less than four grams of sugar per serving.

Keep in mind—polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are good for you and help fight depression.

Can't seem to find any food that fits the bill? Dr. Oz says you should head over to the produce aisle and stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables. Packaged goods usually contain harmful, artificial ingredients because they're designed to stay on the shelf for years, he says.

The supermarket shelves are filled with foods that seem healthy…but don't be fooled. Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen say that 50 percent of the sugar we eat comes from "fat free" foods like salad dressings and soft drinks. In fact, young women get about half their daily calories from salad dressing! Dr. Oz says to substitute olive oil and vinegar for a healthier alternative.

It's 3 p.m. and you're craving something sweet…and something salty. Before you put your quarters into the closest vending machine, consider some healthy alternatives to potato chips and candy bars.

When Dr. Oz wants to crush a craving, he relies on his emergency snacks, which he carries everywhere! "Emergency foods you want tend to be foods that are a little crunchy with some sweetness to them," he says.

Apples, carrots and nuts are great snacks to consider. A glass of vegetable juice also takes the edge off, he says. One snack you may not have thought of are breath strips! "I like [breath strips] because, a lot of times, we have a craving center in our brain that says put something in me," he says. "It doesn't tell you what."

Dr. Oz says a glass of water, a good night's sleep or sex might also satisfy your craving center.

Another way to fight fat is to spice it up! Adding red pepper flakes or cinnamon to your food can reduce your appetite. Starting with a smaller plate also helps you eat 33 percent less, Dr. Oz says.

The most important meal of the day »

Breakfast is also a key component to Dr. Oz's diet plan. "People who eat breakfast every day are thinner," he says. "Jump start your metabolism with breakfast—don't miss it!"

Dr. Roizen says people should try to automate their breakfast and lunch. "Why we get so fat is we have so many choices…we want one of everything," he says.

For breakfast, Dr. Roizen says you should have the same thing or the same small variety of things every day. Steel-cut oatmeal, whole grain cereals and egg-white omelets are great options. Then, do the same thing at lunch. Find a lunch that's satisfying and stick with it. Then, come dinner time, you can enjoy a variety of options!

Breakfast smoothie
When soggy cereal and steel-cut oatmeal loses its appeal, whip up one of Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen's favorite breakfast treats!

The Quick Magical Breakfast Blaster
2 servings, 136 calories per serving

1 scoop (1/3 cup) Soy protein (like Nature's Plus Spiru-Tein)
1/2 tablespoon flaxseed oil
1/4 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 large ripe banana (or other fruits of your choice)
1/2 tablespoon apple juice concentrate or honey
1 teaspoon Psyillium seed husks

Peel banana; break into chunks. Put all ingredients in a blender. Add 12 ounces of water and ice, as well as powdered vitamins. Cover, blend until fairly smooth.

The only four exercises you'll ever need to know »

You don't need balls, mats and elastic bands to get a great workout. Dr. Oz says there are only four exercises that you'll ever need to know—and none require fancy machinery!

First, Dr. Oz suggests that people walk for at least 30 minutes each and every day. "Walking is the foundation for all other exercises because it increases your stamina and prepares your body for strength training," he says. You should strive to walk 10,000 steps a day.

The second step is to build muscle by lifting weights for 30 minutes a week. You can lift a dumbbell, a gallon of milk or your toddler…just start lifting!

Now that you're on the right track, Dr. Oz says you have to work up a sweat for about an hour a week. "The number one predictor of how long you're going to live is how well you can exercise your heart," he says. "If you can push yourself to sweat for an hour a week, that's great. You can break it down into three little segments of 20 minutes each."

Finally, you have to stretch so that you don't get hurt. Dr. Oz likes to do yoga, but he says you can get the same benefits from stretches you learned in high school gym class.

Watch beginner, intermediate and advanced workouts.

There's one secret fat-burner that you can do anywhere—fidgeting! Most of the one million calories you consume every year are burned without you ever thinking about it. Only 15 to 30 percent of calories are burned through intentional physical activity, so minor additions like being fidgety helps keep off the pounds!

How many times have you heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? Dr. Oz says it's important for losing weight, too!

If you're looking for a needed addition to your breakfast menu, try this "magic drink"—chock-full of healthy ingredients like blueberries, bananas, soy protein and apple juice.

You might notice a couple of ingredients in there you've never heard of before—psyllium husks and flaxseed oil. The psyllium husks provide fiber and the flaxseed oil adds Omega 3 fats. "When you have fiber for breakfast, you're not hungry all day long because you've got a stable blood sugar."

Dr. Oz says the recipe is open for alterations. "Strawberries and peaches would give it a little more 'oomph,'" Oprah says.

Dr.Oz cont.

Dr. Oz encourages people to drink 100 percent fruit juice. Despite their high calories, these juices have valuable nutrients. "You're only going to be able to diet long-term if you aim at a hundred calories. Don't try to lose 500 a day," he says. "You can cut a hundred calories a day just by being smarter in what you eat."

Dr. Oz says eating dinner backwards can actually help you lose weight. In Europe, most salads are eaten at the end of the meal, which Dr. Oz says is beneficial. "The salads stimulate those digestive enzymes. They have a lot of water in them and they physically fill you up, so you're less craving of desserts afterwards," Dr. Oz says. "The other thing is that salads have a little bit of sweet to them so you won't desire the dessert as much as a taste on top of that."

Still, most of us aren't eating European meals with many courses. Many people, like Eric, a 41-year-old salesman who travels frequently, only have time to grab fast food. Eric wants to know more about making healthy choices when fast food is his only option.

Dr. Oz says there are three things you should consider when fast food is your only option.

Avoid fried foods.
Avoid fattening salad dressings.
Be proud of a "doggie bag."

YOU: When You Need a Fast Food Fix
From the show Dr. Oz Answers Your Burning Weight Loss Questions

We know how it is. Sometimes you need the absolute quickest path from food to belly. While most fast food options can be destructive, there are healthier options on the menu. Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen take you through the drive-thru.

Make smarter fast food choices with this printable chart!
Link to page to download the chart:
http://www2.oprah.com/health/yourbody/youdocs/youdocs_fastfood.jhtml

Some things to remember:
There are some main dishes that can be good for you, but you have to be careful. Some slight name variations can make the difference between causing your fat and keeping you flat.
Avoid side dishes and desserts unless indicated in the chart. They're all loaded with bad fats and simple sugars, and they often have more calories than the main dishes.
Choose low-calorie dressing, not low-fat. Low-fat dressings are steeped in high fructose corn syrup, which has plenty of calories, and the fructose tricks your body into staying hungry.
Don't eat breakfast at fast food places. There are virtually no healthy options on any breakfast menu we could find.

Many viewers have written in wanting to know which bread is best—100 percent whole grain or 100 percent whole wheat? "Either one's fine, but it has to say 100 percent. If it doesn't say 100 percent on there, it doesn't count," Dr. Oz says. "When it says … 7-grain bread, none of that matters."

When wheat grows, there's an outer shell that has a lot of fiber and B vitamins in it, Dr. Oz says. If it's not 100 percent, Oz says that means some of the nutrients in that important shell have been removed and you're not getting what you should.

Numbers also count when it comes to dessert. Dr. Oz says when you need a sweet treat, reach for a little bit of chocolate—and a brownie doesn't count! Don't go for the milk chocolate either, Dr. Oz says. You need dark chocolate with 70 percent or more pure cocoa to reap the benefits of flavonoids.

"Flavonoids are these really powerful, vitamin-like substances that when you eat them, guess what they do? They dilate the arteries of the body," Dr. Oz says. "We actually have data they may be beneficial to the heart. So a little bit of dark chocolate is a wonderful dessert."

No gyms, no expensive equipment and no excuses! Take 20 minutes out of your day to try Dr. Oz's gym-free workout. Start with the beginner exercises and work your way up to the advanced version. Complete this workout three times per week—along with your daily walk—to improve your strength, flexibility and cardio fitness.

Dr. Oz's Holiday Secrets
From the show Dr. Oz Answers Your Burning Weight Loss Questions

The average person gains one pound over the holidays. That may not sound like much, but if you ate like that all year long, you'd gain 12 pounds in a year—that's no small gain.

The combination of celebration, abundant food, and the stress of travel and spending time with family makes overeating seem nearly impossible to avoid. Dr. Oz says not to focus on losing waist during the holidays. Instead, work to build muscle and keep stable so that you can lose waist after the gifts have been unwrapped, the decorations are back in the attic, and your cousins are back at their houses.

1.) Sleep Does a Body Good
Getting seven hours of sleep per night helps keep you from turning to food—especially carbohydrates—for comfort. This will also promote muscle growth. Therefore, you should stay away from habits that interrupt sound sleep, like drinking too much alcohol and eating within three hours of bedtime.

2.) Holiday Cooking…Tasty and Healthier
Cooking healthier meals for the holidays doesn't mean that your family will have to sacrifice flavor. Dr. Oz recommends a few ways that you can add good nutritional ideas to classic dishes.

Reduce the amount of butter and use pecans as a substitute to flavor some foods. Mix in chopped fruits or herbs—add fresh cranberries to roll recipes, stir raisins into stuffing mixes, and whip crushed garlic into mashed potatoes.

Spicy food can help reduce your appetite, so add ingredients like cinnamon and red pepper flakes to old favorites.

Cut the saturated fat in your meal by skimming the fat off the top of gravy, flavoring squash with pineapple juice instead of butter, replacing sour cream dips with hummus, and eating turkey's light meat rather than its richer dark meat.

3.) Adjust Your Party Plan
With the spread of delicious treats and flowing alcohol, it can be especially hard to monitor your waist at the multitude of holiday parties you'll attend this season. For these parties, Dr. Oz says you really have to focus on adjusting your behavior.

Prepare before you leave. Eating some nuts 30 minutes before heading to a party will cut down your appetite.

When you arrive, always have one hand free to greet others. This is both good manners and will keep you from two-fisted eating or having wine in one hand and food in the other.

Alternate drinking glasses of alcohol with water to dilute the effects of lowered inhibitions. Or, if you're at a dinner party, have drinks only after dinner for dessert.

4,) When Snacks Attack
One difficult part of watching your waist during the holidays is all of the time you spend with snacks nearby.

To reduce the impulse to mindlessly munch, buy walnuts in the shell. The time it takes to shell a single serving—roughly one ounce or about 14 halves—may help you avoid overeating.

Dr. Oz also recommends keeping mint breath strips around. They can satisfy the desire to taste and satisfy your brain's craving center.
