Should children be allowed to have a cellphone?   Wha age would you allow your child to have one?

If they have a job, a car and willing to pay the bill themselves, more power to them, so I'd say around 16 would be a good age.

I don't think they could be any more irresponsible than "adults" with cell phones.
Seriously, what does a child( 5 up to 13 or 14 ) need with a cell phone? They are easily distracted and if they walk to and from school, how easy would it be to walk into on coming traffic, etc.Especially if the driver is pre-occupied on their cell?
Or radio, blinding sun?
Actually, if I had it my way, I'd be writing this on paper, watching Bonanza on a 12 inch black and white Philco ( non remote) and drinking a ten cent Coke sitting beside my black rotary dial phone on my corner table.
  AMEN

With 2 teens I told them both when they start driving, the cell phone has the same rules as the car does. If they have a part time job, pay the bill and I can always reach them, they can have it. If it disturbs us or they constantly keep it in their ear, it goes.

Lets just say that i have a 16 yr old girl here that thinks that since her "friends" have cell~phones that means that she should have one.

I believe that if they are old enough to have a car, a job and a few other responsibilities then they can have a phone.

I work in a convience store and believe me i see more rude Adults using phones then i do the kids.

right now Bri isnt responsible enough to have a cell-phone and wont have one until she is.

My sister owned a cellular phone store and then later my very close cousin where I had been employed for the last 3 years up until last Nov. but I have a slightly diffrent opinion then other on this subject.
My daughter is 9 and has what she "thinks" to be her own cell phone. Only pre-paid minutes which only have to be added every 3 months and what wasn't used before rolls over with new mins. for another 3 months (so not very expensive). I do make her buy her own $10 cards with what money she earns from family members or birthday money ect. I control the phone and she don't carry it with her unless I ok it but I'm telling ya it has really been a piece of mind for me.
For example I was getting out of the shower one day and she asked if she could go to the neighbors instead of rushing out of the bathroom i told her to take the phone and call me once she was inside the door she called 3 minutes later and I knew she was safely there.
Right now I don't let her go to many friends houses but I know I'll have to let go some as she gets older in which case she will have her cell phone and be able to sneak off in the bathroom or whatever if need be weather she feel uncomfy and wants to come home with out making friend feel bad or if she just wants to let me know all is well.
