Is Homeschooling Right for Me? Things that you need in order to homeschool: Patience and flexability- These are the main 2 things needed! We will come back to these in a few moments. Starting out Where to start? Well, this is the easy part. Be realistic. Ask yourself why you are wanting to homeschool. Everyone has their reasons. Then start doing some research. Check into the laws in your state. Know the law, and your rights. Dont be afraid to ask questions, and dont be afraid to ask the same questions to multiple people. This is the hardest part, believe it or not. If you ask the local school board and a homeschool accountability group the same question, dont be surprised to get 2 different answers. I'm not saying all school districts are this way, but most want you to keep your kids in public school! Once ya know the law, and know how you plan to stay within the law and homeschool, next is Know what you're getting into. When you take on homeschooling your children, you should be aware that there are constant interuptions that threaten your time and concentration, days when your children surely will not cooperate with anything you want to happen, illness...just to name a few of the challenges. Your friends and family will know you are home and figure it's a good time to call or drop by. Be ready for these unexpected deterrents. Be flexible and patient. Next is organization. You've checked the laws, you've read everything you could, you've asked all the questions you can think of, you know what you're getting yourself into, and you are ready to get started! YOU MUST GET Organized! Create an area in your home specifically for homeschool. Set the "mood". You might want to invest in a file cabinent to keep all the records needed. Next comes the big question, what will I teach? There are several curriculums out there that walk ya step by step through the entire year. You can also make your own pulling from different curriculums, or design your very own from scratch. Its up to you. Determine what supplies you will need and get them. Its helpful to create an outline for the year, then break it into months, weeks, days, etc. Develop a daily schedule, including chores for each family member. Post it where everyone can see it. For older childern you can also do a weekly schedule, this gives them more responsibility and a choice of what they want to do each day. Whatever works for you and your family. Also most importantly, ask for your children's advice. It will make things much easier if they have a reasonable say in things.
