It was May 6, 1996, went to out-patient in the hospital I worked for at the time. Right arm (dominant hand) First draw: threw the vein, bled into arm don't know how long butx-ray was black. Second draw: after I said DO NOT DIG b/b I'm a bad stick, she moved needle to go after vein and hit the Median nerve and into the plane of nerves on the outside of my elbow. I saw stars, instant burning,stabbing up and down elbow to hand. Almost fell out of chair, everything went black but I could hear but couldn't talk or anything. This other phlebotimist came in asked what happened, after he grabbed me too from almost falling out of chair. She said "Oh she had a fasting test" They thought I passed out b/c of that, and gave me OJ. (which I drank out of reflex) But I was in so much pain and disbelief that I felt canatonic I felt like I was watching from the ceiling and this was happening to someone else. John drew my blood from left arm no problem. Went back to my cubicle in Fianace, still in severe pain. Called my friend in my department (her mom was a nurse). She said warm compresses and elevate. A half moon hematoma started with a red line threw center of elbow. Pain still not subsiding. Getting worse. Called primary nurse told me the same thing, if not better in 2 days, see doctor. Now swollen, cold, stabbing, burning pain up and down elbow to tip of fingers. Left early that day, didn't even make it to lunch I think. Will con't another day.  |
