If a client requests color correction, and let's say that in theory, the ideas we have would work, but know that store bought boxes of color could contain metallic dyes that won't lift. Could anyone tell me which box colors do contain metallic dyes, so I know not to even attempt them...being that supplies needed to correct are limited? And also, could you give me some situations where YOU yourself would NOT even attempt if you generally consider yourself a good colorist? Thanks, I look forward to any input from anyone!

Hi I have run into this a few times. When in doubt do not do. I do not know which are which you can phone the hotlines of the co. and ask. What I have done over the years is gone to the drugstore and health food stores and bought what the clients buy and take hair samples and do a batch up after processing and sample is clean and dry I use different removing systems. I work with the darkest colour black brown and some reds. I have found that color graffics works the best to remove , I have the worst case was flirt I did try a bit of perm solution frist washed and dry the sample then put graffics on that got rid of black and the red pigment. Coloured the hair with synx semi color rinsed towel dry and put clear prizm on to seal the hair shaft. for 20 min under heat rinsed then blowdryed even used the curling iron on it and it worked. I used this on a client male it took some time but I and he was very happy with the result. The follow up colour service was a soclor with ten vol. and more clear prizm. I frist told him that before he even started that he would have to commit to buying all the products I recommed  and would always have to come to me for the service as until the new  hair grew in . I told him the cost before I started and the follow up costs for a 12 month program. So far so good. ....................W

I have a client coming in this week for colour correction...same thing...used box colour and now it is fading she doesnt want it anymore. I have Color Graphics and considered foiling thru with this to lighten.

Im so glad I read this because now I dont feel frightened to proceed.

Im not that great with bleach and it scares the heck out of me. I wish people wouldnt use colour from the store and then want us to fix it.

Hey Amy...
To be quiet honest.. I am not sure either which over the counter colors contain metallic tints or which ones don't.. What I usually do though in CORRECTIVE COLOR CONSULTATION... Is EXPLAIN to the client.. that due to what they have done themselves at home.. prevents me from accomplishing what they want...

But I take it as serious as .. that I just assume that THEY(the store bought colors or box colors)  ALL HAVE METALLIC AND VEGATABLE TINTS..

So to be quiet honest.. depending on what they want to achive... I tell them from the GET GO...
That unfortately due to that they colored it themselves.. that the color they used could and may have contained metallic dyes and vegatable tints.. which would prevent the hair from lifting... So depending what their end result is.. I will tell them unfortately they need to let it grow out.. then I make DO-ABLE suggestions..
Such as if the hair is say a funky orange color that got screwed up.. I suggest they can deposite color with no problems more or less.. just to achieve a even all over color..

If they have colored their hair the DREADED BLK... I suggest doing some highlights... to make it NOT SO BLK.. But let them know BLONDE HI-LITES IS OUT THE QUESTION.. Possiable.. darker to med brown at the most.. and if lucky could do maybe redish highlights.. or something along those lines..
Just some ideas.. of what ya could do... I always explain risk upfront..
and if the hair is already  really dry.. I explain I refuse to do anything major like CORRECTIVE COLOR.. Until the hair is healthier to be able to take the chemicals.. safely without destroying the hair...

This is all just what I do and what My reactions are... Hope it helps you though..!!!

I gotta let ya know also.. I agree with indiana...
"WHEN IN DOUBT DON'T DO"
That is the safest way to go...   I usually will explain the hair is to damaged or being it is home hair color that it is not achiveable what they want.. and I prefer not to attempt it... being that it could end them in a worser situation than they started with...
