I had this male client today whose girlfriend had tried to highlight his hair. It came out very patchy and blotchy, not like highlights at all. So, I suggested we go back to his light brown haircolor and then redo the highlights. He had decided only to do the light brown color, because he didn't want to be there that long, and didn't have alot of money. So, I know that usually you have to fill the hair first and then put the color in, but I've seen so much success with just using demi color because it deposits. Well, he had what looked like between a level 6-7 light brown natural level, and the blond that I was fixing could have been a level 10, and I mixed up Matrix Colorsynch, and used 1/2 6n and 1/2 8A. It didn't take the color all the way, so I decided to apply one shade darker. It blended in ok, not so blotchy, but it didn't cover the way I wanted to, which was a solid base. He was fine with it because it looked better, but I was wondering if there was something I could have done differently?

i would have went with one shade darker than my desired shade, so if i wanted a level 6 , i would use a level 5 and i would a have added some warmth to the formula.  hope that helps.

oh star.....
the problem is color sync. I don’t like it, and all regis salons have it. I just don’t like the way it grabs, and I don’t like the way it comes out kind of matte.I much prefer redken shades eq. I would have blended shades 6n, 8n, and just a touch of 9g, vanilla cream. whenever im covering over a mistake like that, I avoid using ash...I stay with neutrals, and I find that adding atouch of gold acts as a natual filler.....
I wish we had shades at regis, I really do.......

I wish we had alot of things we don't there.  But, I guess we have no choice but to work with what we have for now. So, I guess using a level 5 would have covered it completly, I was just afraid it would be too dark and unnatural. I should have mixed gold with it to act as a filler and deposit at the same time. Well, you live and learn I guess. Thanks for your help!

the science to tint back, you have to put back all the color shades (undertones) that are missing when tinting back. for example if my client is naturally a level 4 and her her colored hair is at a 10 i need to go back and fill in the undertones that are missing from a 4 to 10, so looking at a color chart that shows you the undertones at each level will tell you whats missing. missing undertones from a 4 to a 10 are red/orange, orange, orange/yellow, yellow/orange, yellow, so i would fill the hair first with these undertones and then use one shade darker than my desired color, so i would use a level 3 or half of a 3 and half of a 4.
hope this helps.

I have found that when I need coverage I use the 50 series to any of the formulas and you do not need to fill. I have used the color snkx and added the 50 into it and it is fast and wonderful coverage and nice depth in tone.....................wendy
