Hey everybody, I have a problem and I would love some imput. A couple of months ago I was wooed away from my previous job to work at a new salon in town.  The shop is only about a year old and the manager who is not the owner, seemed really nice and enthusiastic about the future of this salon.  I felt the need for a change and went to work at this shop.  The salon is beautiful and only around the corner from my home it seemed so perfect.  Well the manager is a PSYCHO. About a month ago she started verbally abusing me and my clients every day about stoupid stuff.  apparently it is unprofessional to measure your color and developer, there is a proper way to hold a broom while sweeping, my clients are not allowed to park in the parking lot, and so on.  the constant crap caused me to leave yesterday.  I told the owner I was leaving because of the manager, she informed me that nobody has stayed at that salon for any longer than 2 months since this woman took over as manager. They all quit for the same reason as me. I'm the 6th one to quit since Feb.  The owner called me a little while ago and asked me to come back.  She said she's going to do something about this woman but she's known about her for this long.  I feel bad for leaving because the owners are really nice, but the manager stresses me out so much I have chest pains and shake when she pulls into the parking lot.   I'm the only other person who worked in the salon besides the PSYCHO.  I had my own room but she would come in and go through my closet.  It was very unpleasant.     I have an audition at another salon on Monday I don't think I'll have any problem.  My clients understand why i left.  She freaked them out too.   I've put so much time and money into getting my self situated at this place, I don't know if I should just stick it out.  I told the owner I cant work with this woman, she said she would take care of it.  I dont know what to do.   Has anyone else here worked with a PSYCHOPATH.  I mean this person's face will start twitching and stuff it's really freaky.  I'm so desperate im considering going back to a chain salon.  at least i know my clients will be allowed to park in the parking lot.  (She said there was never a problem with the parking lot being full before I came to work there.  can you believe that, that is just a wierd thing to say)  I'll shut up now please will you tell me I'm doing the right thing.

I have worked with psycho managers before, and luckily, they would leave before I was forced to. Besides, there are always so many turnovers all the time, I'm not even fazed by anything anymore! It doesn't sound like this woman is the type who would leave however. First, I want to ask you if the owner is planning on firing the manager? Because if she is, then I don't see any reason to leave the salon if you didn't really want to. You can't beat the location, it's so convenient for you. If not, then I do think it's best you follow through with the other job you have the audition for. There is no reason for you to be forced to endure abuse from anyone, or to make yourself sick over it! No job is worth the aggravation, no amount of money can compensate for your physical and mental health. Find out exactly what the owner plans to do about the manager before you decide anything. Good luck!

The thing is the owner told me a couple of times that she was going to force her to quit.  she asked me to manage the salon if she does. I told her I would only long enough to help her find a new mgr.  I really don't want the position.  The owner called me last night to ask me to come back I told her the only way I would is if she was gone.  I'm the 6th person since Febuary to go through this.  the owner told me that she's invited stylists to work at the salon and they said no because of the mgr.  Still nothing.  Thank you for your imput.

I can totally relate to the situation you are in. I worked for a owner who was the same way. It sounds like you already know what you have to do. The ball so to speak is in the owners court. They do not have to "force her to quit" they need to simply fire her. Do consider this if the owner is reluctant to let go of some one who is jepordising their buisness then maybe you don't want to work for someone who will put a personal relationship before the buisness. That will affect you and your cleints, if this situation should come around again with this owner. It might be some thing you should discuss with the owner(your concerns about them letting 6 people quit before doing anything about it).  This is your buisness you must do what is right for you and your clients long term.

Isn't a parking lot full of clients' cars a good thing?
