Ok...I've really done it now!!! I was doing laundry in the back room, and I was carrying the laundry basket out the door, I turned  sideways to get out the door, and knocked over the shop's tv/dvd combo! I tried to catch it, but I wasn't able to in time. It crashed really hard, and when I pluged it in to see if it worked, it was broken! I wanted to call the manager, but I just couldn't do it, so I left a note on her station. I'm off tomarrow, she is working in the morning, she'll find out then along with the rest of the story by a coworker. I'm really scared, I don't know what's going to happen to me!

To make my day worse, two other girls who were working with me decided they wanted to leave early because it wasn't that busy. Since I had plans after work, I made sure I closed out on time. It was about 5:00 (according to the shop's clock), and this lady, clearly a summer person asked for our hours. I graciously stopped what I was doing, handed her a card with our hours, and said our phone number is on that too. Then she asked if I'm still taking people, I said we were closed, and she said, but you still 5 mins to spare. I ALREADY HAD THE MONEY SPREAD OUT ON THE DESK and in the middle of the closeout. Then, an older woman with her, I think her mother it was asked if she could buy something. I gestured to the money, and said, I sorry but I'm already closing out. She got annoyed saying it's illeagal to close before advertised store hours. I swear, no one else had ever pointed that out! Since I was already reeling from my bad day, I said "well I am!" I really had to go. She asked for my name, and then questioned if I was telling the truth. LOL! Did she think she was intimidating me??? It must have been nice being the other girls who left early enjoying that sunshine! Is it fair I had to be the one behind the gate taking that crap by myself? I know I wasn't in the wrong, we are allowed to close 10 mins before closing time!

WOW! What a crappy day! I work in the same kind of salon that you do Star. ( I believe you work at a SS?)  So I can def relate! O.k... i think I would've called the manager right away and said hey I broke the tv. I hate to say it but you may have made the siuation worse by just writing a note to her. Things happen by accident and it was an accident. I drop my clippers and my blowdryer all the time! When I first started working there I  freaked out the first time I dropped my clippers, and my manager told me it's o.k. because the company can replace it, if I did accidnetally break them. Honestly things happen and no one is perfect and she says that all the time.

And about the two women: Don't worry about them, you were closing out. You had been there for 8 hours already or more, and PEOPLE JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT WE WANT TO GO HOME TOO!!!!!!!!!!! LOL! I want to scream that sometimes! If i've worked all day and worked my butt off I would like to go home. I simply say: "I'm sorry I'm done for the day, I've been here since so and so time and we'll be opening again at 9 am tomm. Thank you for stopping by though!" The last part states nicely that your not asking them to leave but kind of impying it.  And honestly with that ladies remark of " you have 5 minutes left! "  Augh... you can't do a haricut in 5 minutes. Pretty plan and simple! If someone comes in a quarter till and I know I can't do their hair before closing I simple say i'm sorry we close in 15 minutes and that is not enough time for me. I like to spend at least a half hour with each of my clients.  I mean if it's a bang trim that's different.

Everyone has bad days, I've had a few lately. It comes with the job, and working in a serivce oreinted job. It takes all kinds of people to make the world turn!

Good Luck!
Jen

Thanks for your honesty Jen. I agree with you, and I feel just as guilty handling it the way that I did, just as much as breaking the tv. It's true, they do replace things that break all time, but I felt the tv might have been a little extreme for them lol. I imagined them packing things in the boxes, with their hands shaking thinking of the money had to spend...it's like pulling teeth getting them to replace anything that cost them out of their own pockets (at least that's what my manager always acts like, which caused me to get that frightened). I would actually have no problem if they wanted to garnish my paycheck to replace the damn thing. I just didn't want to be the one responsible for us no longer having a DVD player. Maybe you and those who told me they would be happy to replace it are right.

I see you've also understand about the two women situation. I'm sure other people would think differently, but in these busy shops...there will always be business tomorrow. I for one, wouldn't dream of putting anyone out, and I would certainly feel more comfortable getting any kind of service done bright and early in the morning when the stylist is fresh and alert. Hey, she probably never worked a day in her life if she can't understand that!

Those women are selfish.........and nervy!  Who's to say their watch was right on time......5 minutes give or take is basically the same time.  And for them to say it's illegal............illegal my a**!  You have every right to close the shop about that time.....I see businesses close during the day for an hour or two because everyone decided to go for lunch....or had something to do.  People are suppose to make appointments!  Walk-ins welcome signs means appointment are the way to go, but "walk-ins welcome"  As if we're making an exception for those who can't decide in advance what their doing on that afternoon.  Personally, I wouldn't want my hair cut on a whim, by someone is done with their day.  And another note, we reserve the right to refuse service........

The company doesn't have the right to garnish your paycheck for the TV.  Accidents happen, and that is why they have insurance.  You are lucky that you didn't get hurt!  I hope you didn't get hurt.  If you did, then the employer is responsible for your injuries, and maybe the TV/DVD was not placed in a safe spot or stable.

Please don't feel awful!  None of this was your fault........you have good intentions.....and you stayed till closing, you did the laundry, you closed out the draw......where was everyone else!  You deserve a Thank You, and they are lucky you didn't get hurt by the TV, you probably are a great employee to them, and what would they do, if you couldn't come to work the next schedule day if your arm or leg was broken by their wobbly TV!

I hope you enjoy your day off with plenty of relax time......don't worry about this

First, thank you for all your kind words. You have no idea how reading that conforted me. Well, it was the manager's day off, but I did hear from the coworker who was there with me, that she didn't act like it was too big a deal, and added that I always get too worked up over nothing. She hardly ever shows emotion, I wish she did, because it actually makes me more worried when I don't get a reaction if that makes sense. She just kept asking HOW it happened. I see her tomorrow, so I'm going to find out whether we could have it replaced.

Amy,
How did this end up for you? Did it ever get replaced?

Well, last time I asked, the manager said she told the DM, and she has to put in for it. I hope it's soon, because we are going to need it for our next meeting. No one seemed very angry about it, but the manager said I'm way too hyper, and I need to take it easy when I'm doing things lol. Personally, I think where it was was a hazard anyway, and suggested she keep it in the other back room where she stores the boxes, out of our way. Thanks for asking btw.
