"In great deeds something abides. On Great fields something stays.Forms change and pass;bodies disappear;but spirits linger, to consecrate ground for the vision-place of souls. And reverent men and women from afar, and generations that know us not and that we know not of , heart-drawn to see where and by whom great things were suffered and done for them, shall come to this deathless field, to ponder and dream, and lo! the shadow of a mighty presence shall wrap them in its bosom, and the power of the vision pass into their souls."

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain
(Gettysburg,October 3,1889)

Gettysburg Cam

Full details of the 3day battle

The fighting started on July 1,1863  , the union Calvalry  led by General Buford attempted to hold off the Confederate advance west of the town in the area know as "McPherson Ridge" and Seminary Ridge .Later in the afternoon ,however , the Confederates were attacking west and north of town "north" being by the present location of the Peace Light Memorial

The Union corps were forced to retreat through town and up to the high ground known as Cemeterey Hill (This was soon to be realized as a "blessing" because this gave the Union the advantage of "high ground") The second day of battle saw fighting heavy on both ends of the Union Lines, Longstreet attacking areas around Little Round Top  , Devil'sDen, and the Wheatfield .As the fighting concluded on the left , the hostilities quickly shifted to the far right end of the Union line on Culp's Hill and East Cemetery Hill.
The final day of the battle started early when the union launced attacks at the base of culps hill , attempting to retake what ground had been lost the evening before. This fighting lasted nearly 7 hours . By late morning , the Union Army had retaken their trenches and the Confederates on that end of the Battlefield where spent. Following a brief lull, Lee launched his final attack ... ordering Longstreet to have all of  his men to converge at what Lee thought "had" to be a week spot in the Union "fish hook" the "Corpse of Trees"  at" the angle" , this attack is known as Pickett's Charge.
