A few weeks ago at the end of a service at the temple I attend, my teacher/priest gave a short lecture, as he normally does, this time talking about the Bible. Now he wasn’t bashing the bible or any beliefs contained therein, more so he was just examining a particular parable in this book. Now I don’t remember the area of the book that it was in, maybe one of you will, but I do remember the basics of the story, two of which I’m sure most of you have heard. My teacher proposed a very interesting question when this was read, one that happens to coincide with what I have always thought to be true, see whatcha think.

Jesus, on one of his many trips J , was speaking with two noble men who did not know of his teachings. The men where very pessimistic of what Jesus had to say and therefor had decided to try and find fault in the words he was presenting.

The first man asked, "What is God’s greatest law?" Jesus answered "To love they lord God with all of your heart, mind, and soul, giving your self to him completely." The two men understood what Jesus was saying and then asked the second question. (This is where things become paradoxical, as it would seem the second answer poses certain problems with the first answer) the men asked, "what then is God’s second law?" Jesus answered, "to love thy self and thy neighbor as you would love him."

Now the second answer poses and interesting question, if one loves God completely, following his greatest rule, with all of their heart, mind, and soul, how then can you love yourself and your neighbor in the same way? If you have given all you have to God what is left to follow the second rule? Now there is a fairly simple answer to this question, one that many will not buy, but that’s ok to. In order to love God as completely as he has asked, and then to follow his second rule of loving they neighbor as you would love him, it would beg the answer, self, neighbor, and God must be the same. If God has commanded us to love him completely but then wants us to love others and ourselves equally and completely, God then would, by his very own words, be saying they are me, you are me and I am all of you. All the same.

It makes me wonder of course, what was truly meant by what was said. I mean look at translations of other languages even today, there are some words that simply have no English translation, so its left to the translator to determine what that word might actually mean in English. If the translation of this one parable was done without true understanding, it could mean a whole different thing to the Christian church. That is to say, this basic rule of God, the highest of all his laws, could mean that God is universally everything, and what Jesus had said to these two men was misinterpreted or not understood. Could it be that Jesus was enlightened and new the true nature of the universe, but as the Buddha did, used simple stories and analogies to teach the common people of the time in a way that they might understand? After all to come right out and tell people what reality actually is can be, not only confusing, but also completely ignored due to its complex simplicity and its deviation from our life’s conditioning.

In any case I thought I would give this to you all to think about, many of the devout "God is a single entity" believers will not agree I’m sure, and that’s ok. The one thing I’m sure we can agree on is that Jesus, like the Buddha, thought that universal loving kindness and compassion where the key, and it would seem knowing that, that both paths lead to the same place…just at different speeds.

Cool post Mykkyo.  Somtimes something that struck a cord with us doesnt with anyone else.  I am always surprised when I post a big realization or a story and nobody answers it. :-)

I only have one comment to your post.  That comment is even in Christian beliefs God is not singular.  The holly trinity consists of "Father, Son, Holy Spirit"  those three = the Christian God.  Its how you choose to break down the Son part that will define wether or not we are all equals "all is one".  We are according to the bible God's Children and Jesus our brother.   The Holy Spirit is another that you would have to define for yourself... the way teh bible speaks of it it is the essence of everything.

And I do agree about the interpretations in the bible.  My understanding is it was first Greek then translated to another language then another then to English.... and very few ever went back to the original writings to directly translate it.  One book I read by a man doing just that stated that "Worry" is a sin.  According to the original translation.... If you worry you sin.

If you worry you sin...that makes sense to me.
I was raised morman and some members of my family are devoutly christian. I have nothing against thier beliefs, they just don't work for me. But I'm always looking for parallels between thier beliefs and mine because I believe so much of it is really the same thing but with different words. In buddhism there isn't sin, but there is the notion of morality. It's more about trying to act in ways that are beneficial and avoiding causing harm or suffering. For a long time I've believed that the commandments in the bible and the notion of 'sin' was originally meant in this way. I look at it like okay, we'll call this list of stuff "sin". And when you sin, you'll most likely cause suffering for yourself or those around you, and we'll call this suffering "hell". So if you don't want to be in hell, avoid sinning.
And worrying seems to fit right in with things that cause suffering. It doesn't help anyone, but it can really raise the blood pressure and cause stomach problems.
There's a quote from seven years in tibet about worrying...
"In Tibet we have a saying. If a thing can be changed, then there is no reason to worry. If it can not be changed, then worrying will not help."

What a wonderfull post mykkyo. I agree completely about Jesus. he was enlightend,a true light to the world,a true teacher.Maybe we got mixed up with what he was trying to teach somewhere along the way, religion is man made. Jesus said follow me.But they began to follow other negative things, greed, money, power, war, terror.Still the same today hey?
Personaly,it doesnt matter who was what and whom is whom, just that we get to where we need to be spiritualy, and go HOME,to the place we ALL came from.

i was raised by strictly christian people. my grandparents do not interpret the bible, the bible is what it says and it is no matter for them to understand it. my mother interprets the bible as actuality and metaphor combined. and both would give the same answer on the  'holy trinity' - god (father) is for heaven with the seraphin or whatnot, christ (son) is for our spirits to take our thoughts and cleanse them before god, and the holy spirit is what exists inside of us and around us on earth, to remind us of his love.

my grandfather says there is no equality- there is god, there are the heirarchies of other godly or ungodly beings, there is man, and there is woman.  further in this form of christianity, there is no equality (or even conception of equality or thought to the possibility or usefulness of equality) between the  sexes, as eve was fashioned from adam to be a helper to him thereby women exist to support men.equality would be against god's will and or judgement.  (the interesting thing about this therory is that women therefore exist as sub because they are of man, and yet man is of god, so while it says we are subservient all the way down the lines it also says we are of eachother)

personally, i think one of the best things jesus said was " i am"  ....  and yoga i think that qoute is a fantastic example- an adage for life.  if the life we have, and the free will spoken of so often in the bible, is the gift we ourselves along with religions world wide purport it to be, then worry is a 'sin' and suffering is 'hell' and why wouldn't we regard every molecule as the same being as another molecule, and wouldn't service to 'god' be service to the joy of each being in the fullest appreciation and enjoyment of this vast playground spread all around us?

as to my understanding, sheol was the origin of the concept of hell. it was a place in which the garbage of some town was burned, and the fire raged there (in some sort of crater) continually, and sometimes murderers or other violent or unwanted people were tossed in there too.  hence "burn in hell for your sins"... and even in the back listings of suggested reading topis in some bibles hell is listed as a figurative place, and fire is suggested as the cleanser and destroyer of all- like it washes away sins by obliterating any trace.

end point, the teachings of christ seem to have as much or as little merit as any other freethinker..... and all people meander the path at different speeds regardless of what they are pondering on the way
