150 years ago today, on 1 November 1858, the government of India passed from the East India Company to the British government who created the post of Viceroy to govern the vast sub-continent. The Indian Mutiny of 1857-58 and the failure of the East India Company to suppress it without the assistance of the British Army led to their being stripped of the government of India by the India Bill 1858.
