Altered States

Starring William Hurt - somebody else, who cares?. Synopsis: Research scientist Eddie Jessup (William Hurt) believes other states of consciousness are as real as everyday reality. Using sensory deprivation, then adding powerful, hallucinogenic drugs, he explores these altered states... and endures experiences that make madness seem a blessing.

Academy Award winner William Hurt as Jessup (his film debut) heads a solid cast featuring Blair Brown, Bob Balaban and Charles Haid. Working from Paddy Chayefsky’s novel, director Ken Russell guides us with a sorcerer’s skill through Eddie’s magical and horrific journey as Altered States gyrates with dazzling visual bravado and bracing emotional impact. Jacob's Ladder

Starring Tim Robbins, Danny Aiello, Elizabeth Pena, Macaulay Culkin.
Director Adrian Lyne followed his trashy smash FATAL ATTRACTION with this arresting oddity, an arty, terrifying psychological thriller. Scriptedby Bruce Joel Rubin (GHOST) and produced at a cost of $40 million, the film failed at the box office, probably due to a twist ending that almost everyone perceived as a cop-out.

JACOB'S LADDER stars Tim Robbins as Jacob, a divorced Vietnam veteran who lives in New York with his girlfriend Jezzie (a smoldering Elizabeth Pena) and works as a mailman. Jacob is haunted by painful memories of his dead son (a mysteriously unbilled Macaulay Culkin, star of 1990's monster hit HOME ALONE) and of his Vietnam experience when he was nearly killed by a soldier with a bayonet. As the film progresses, Jacob also begins to see weird creatures and startling visions. Suddenly, there are monsters roaming through the streets of New York; closed subway stations take on a creepy life of their own; a crowded party turns into a room full of winged demons; a train full of strangers look as though they have sprouted tails and horns. Are these the visions of a madman or have demons actually come to get Jacob Singer? While trying desperately to cling to his sanity, Jacob enlists the help of his ex-wife (Patricia Kalember), a mysterious stranger (Matt Craven), and an angelic chiropractor (Danny Aiello) to help solve the mystery.

The much-touted screenplay for JACOB'S LADDER circulated in Hollywood for almost a decade, and in a 1983 American Film article, Rubin's screenplay was listed among the ten best unproduced scripts. (In our view, Lyne improved on the screenplay by heightening its ambiguities and jettisoning much fabular preachiness.) Truly frightening and visually unique, this messy, challenging film is anchored by Tim Robbins' remarkable performance.

The Lord of the Rings

Starring The Fellowship of the Ring.
When this movie comes out on Video or Pay-per-View --- I will pass.  Though I don't give it a four-star star rating (maybe 2 1/2 stars sounds right), I am hooked.  Hooked on the sound of Enya's music (of course) and yes, ok, I get sappy and thrilled with the whole good vs. evil thang.  A tough project, to condense the books within a limited time-frame, and Peter Jackson sacrifices the saga for the obvious myths.  But a good cast, and some scary but predictable moments - however, I started to check my watch a lot when the movie entered hour #3.  The make-up should win an Academy Award.  Fantasy fans should have a good time.

What the Bleep do We Know?

Starring Marlee Matlin; Director: William Arntz, Betsy Chasse, Mark Vicente.
The protagonist, Amanda, played by Academy Award-Winning actress Marlee Matlin, finds herself in a fantastic Alice in Wonderland experience whenher daily, uninspired life literally begins to unravel, revealing the uncertain world of the quantum field hidden behind what we consider to be our normal, waking reality. She is literally plunged into a swirl of chaotic occurrences, while the characters she encounters on this odyssey reveal the deeper, hidden knowledge she doesn’t even realize she has asked for. Like every hero, Amanda is thrown into crisis, questioning the fundamental premises of her life–that the reality she has believed in about how men are, how relationships with others should be, and how her emotions are affecting her work isn’t reality at all!
