Most such "studies" likely do not control for the fat content of such diets. As to eating between meals, I don't really know if it's better to eat more in three meals or to eat some fruit between the three meals (assuming you really need the calories). I would try to eat more calories during the three meals first, but if that didn't work I might want to go with four meals before eating fruit between the meals containing high-quality protein.
