The Halliwell sisters, Prue (Shannen Doherty), Piper (Holly Marie Combs) and Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) are bound together by blood, but they could not have been further apart in personality. The oldest, Prue, determined and driven, had a huge problem understanding her free-spirited youngest sister, Phoebe. Piper, the down-to-earth middle sister, often found herself in the role of mediator between the other two. The siblings were willed their childhood home by their grandmother (Penny Halliwell, aka "Grams"), a lovely Victorian manor that has been in their family for generations; Charmed is set in the beautiful city of San Francisco.  The three sisters discover they are powerful witches, the Charmed Ones, and that they are destined to work together to save innocents from the forces of evil ~ as a triumverate of magical sisters, they are almost invincible.

In the first season, there are introductions, to the sisters, their backgrounds, to their friends and family, and to their newly discovered powers.  Prue has the ability to move things with a gesture, Piper can "freeze" people (or demons, as the case may be!), and Phoebe has premonitions when she touches an object. Prue works at an auction house, Piper is a chef, and Phoebe, well, she's currently unemployed.  Prue has friends on the local police force ~
Andy, an ex-boyfriend, and his partner, Daryl. We also meet cute handyman, Leo Wyatt, and eventually learn he's a Whitelighter, a benevolent being, who is able to heal with a touch and can move from place to place in a twinkle of light, known as 'orbing'. Whitelighters were human, but were granted this special status because of the good things they did while mortal. They are protectors of witches.  He starts out fixing things around the manor, and doesn't allow any of the sisters to see him use his powers, and while both Piper and Phoebe find him attractive, we quickly see that the real pair are Leo and Piper, who have had a long term, on-again, off-again relationship to this day.

At the end of season one, the sisters know all about Leo, but Piper also knows that he may never be allowed near her because of the Elders' rule against Whitelighters and witches fraternizing.  Andy is tragically killed by a demon.
The Storyline

In season two, Phoebe and Prue take a second mortgage on the house in order to allow Piper her dream of opening her own club, P3.  The Halliwells also discover they have new neighbors,
Dan Gordon and his pre-teen niece, Jenny.  Dan is very attractive, and is immediately smitten with Piper, who asks for his help renovating the new club.  At the same time, Leo shows back up, in order to help the Charmed Ones with some of their duties, saving innocents.  Piper, faced with a difficult decision between Dan, who is hot, down-to-earth, and non-magical, and Leo, who is hot, as down-to-earth as a Whitelighter can be, and quite magical... Piper chooses Dan.  While she really has feelings for him, her choice is really based more on what she perceives will be an easier, less heart-breaking relationship, as her heart has had quite enough of a stomping in life.

The sisters face some truths about their mother,
Patti, who died when they were all very young; Phoebe doesn't even remember her.  She was drowned by a water demon, and the reason she was killed demonstrates why the Elders don't allow witches and Whitelighters to be together.  It seems that Patti and her Whitelighter, Sam, had fallen in love, and Patti was killed while protecting him.  The Charmed Ones come to terms with this, and work together to destroy the demon who killed their mother.

Prue learns that she has an additional power this season, of astral projection, so that she can be in two places at once.

Things start to swing around again for Piper and Leo, as he goes against the rules and saves her life.  His 'wings are clipped' and made mortal as punishment.  Piper also has some explaining to do when she finds out she called out for Leo instead of Dan while she was half-conscious.  Leo tells Piper that now that he's mortal, he plans on fighting for her.  He eventually wins, and the two acknowledge that they are in love with each other.

The season ends with Leo and Piper as together as they can be for now, and Dan and Jenny leaving; Dan has been rejected and learned Piper was a witch, but she did manage to find a way to make this pain disappear, with a wish and little assist from a genie.  Prue has discovered she enjoys photography and embarked on a new career, and Phoebe has started to master the martial arts, in an effort to make up for not having an active power.
This page in progress, thank you for your patience...

Phoebe Halliwell is younger than Prue and Piper, but older than Paige. Phoebe has the power of premonition (the ability to see events in the future), and sometimes retrocognition (the ability to see past events). To do this, Phoebe must touch an object associated with the information she wants to know about. She has also demonstrated the power of levitation (the ability to lift one's self from the ground), which she triggers with her mind, basically. Phoebe was the one who found the Book of Shadows, and the first to start investigating Wicca, a religion of witchcraft. She is also very able to fight, using kickboxing and other martial art-type maneuvers ~ she honed this talent in response to having an inactive power, as opposed to the active ones that Prue and Piper, and now Paige, possess.  All the sisters have discovered that their powers increase over time.
Phoebe's career course has been a bit bumpy, but she seems to have found her niche as an advice guru in the local newspaper.  In the past, her lovelife was quite active and varied, but she was married to
Cole, a man who was half demon; her faith and their love kept them together for a couple of years.  Dark forces intervened, and, so sadly, by the time Phoebe wound up vanquishing the man who was the love of her life, she as good as hated him.
Phoebe Halliwell protrayed by Alyssa Milano
Alyssa Milano literally grew up in front of the world on ABC's long-running (1984-1992) comedy Who's the Boss, playing Samantha Micelli, Tony Danza’s daughter, on the top-rated series. After the series ended, she moved on to other projects in television, film and stage?which is where Alyssa started out, in 1980 with the national touring company of "Annie."  Alyssa has appeared in several highly rated telefilms, including Gold Rush, which aired as part of ABC's revival of "The Wonderful World of Disney." Also for ABC, Alyssa starred in To Brave Alaska and The Surrogate, and for The Showtime Network, Milano starred in the "Confessions of a Sorority Girl" episode of Rebel Highway. She was also seen in Casualty of Love: The Buttafuoco/Fisher Story, playing Amy Fisher, HBO films Conflict of Interest, and Candles in the Dark, directed by Maximiliian Schell. After two seasons (1997-1998) playing Jennifer Mancini on the hit Fox show Melrose Place, Alyssa re-teamed with Spelling Television to play Phoebe. Alyssa's feature film career includes the title role in the comedy, Hugo Pool, which debuted at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival. This film was directed by Robert Downey, Sr. and co-starred Sean Penn, Malcolm McDowell and Richard Lewis. Alyssa made her executive-producing debut in the thriller, Body Count, in which she also starred opposite actor/recording artist Ice-T.  Additional feature credits include Commando, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Fear, co-starring Reese Whitherspoon and Mark Wahlberg, as well as films Double Dragon, Where the Day Takes You, and Little Sister.
Alyssa has starred on stage in "Tender Offer," a one-act play written by Wendy Wasserstein; "All Night Long," directed by Andre Gregory, and the first musical adaptation of "Jane Eyre." She returned to the theatre in 1991 when she starred in and produced a Los Angeles-based production of "Butterflies are Free."
Alyssa, with help from her mom, has also been very active on the Internet, taking groundbreaking action to protect her rights and the rights of other celebrities online, when nude pictures of her appeared on the web without permission. She won several copyright infringement suits, and dedicated the settlement money to the launch of a new search index on the web, www.safesearching.com.
Alyssa was born December 19th, 1972 in Brooklyn, NY, is 5'2", and is currently single.  Alyssa dated co-star Brian Krause in 2001, and was linked in late '02 to popstar Justin Timberlake.  Alyssa dated co-star Eric Dane, who plays her on-screen honey Jason Dean, in 2003.

Piper and Phoebe Halliwell discovered that they had a fourth sister after Prue was killed; in fact, they met at Prue's memorial service.  They discovered that Patty Halliwell became pregnant while in a relationship with her whitelighter, Sam. The witch and the whitelighter gave the child up for adoption in hopes of keeping her safe from demons.  Paige was adopted by the Matthews, a nice couple who gave her a wonderful life growing up.  Unfortunately, they were killed in a car accident when Paige was a teenager, leaving her alone in the world.  Paige was happy to find out she had sisters, but was not as thrilled -at first- to find out about being a witch.  She has since come to terms, and is delighted about being a Charmed One. Her power is the ability to "call" for items, as well as being able to orb, like her whitelighter father.  Paige is now the headmistress at Magic School.
Paige Matthews portrayed by Rose McGowan
Rose was born on September 5, 1973 in Florence, Italy, the second oldest of six, and relocated with her family to the US at age nine.  The family lived first in Oregon, than California, where she met Gregg Araki, director of The Doom Generation in LA, and he cast her in the film. She later met shock-rocker Marilyn Manson, aka Brian Warner, and was engaged to him from 1998 to 2001. Along with The Doom Generation, Rose has appeared in the films Scream (1996), Phantoms (1998), Jawbreaker (1999), and Monkeybone (2001).

At first Leo Wyatt just popped up in the beginning of the series as a (really) cute handyman, who was immediately smitten with Piper, and vice versa.  The sisters soon learned that he was much more ~ Leo is a Whitelighter, their intermediary with The Elders [the 'powers that be' of Charmed], a virtual encyclopedia of the supernatural beings and events they encounter, and who also has the power to heal.  When he travels it's in a sprinkle of light called orbing, and he can take others with him, which he has done several times.  He is assigned to the Charmed Ones as a guardian and protector.  Leo was actually a young doctor during World War II, and was an exceptionally good person, so when he died, TPTB gave him immortality as well as his healing and orbing powers. While Leo and Piper did fall in love, there were many obstacles to overcome before they did finally marry, in the middle of the third season, in the company of a small group of family and friends. Piper gave birth to their first child, a boy they named Wyatt Matthew Haliwell ~ Wyatt for Leo's last name, Matthew for Paige's last name, and Haliwell, as it's the traditional family name, feared among the powers of evil and respected among the good.  Leo has tested his own reputation, and stretched the forces of good's patience pretty far, after killing Gideon, an elder and former mentor, after discovering the Magic School's headmaster was trying to kill Wyatt, who is destined to be the most powerful magical being ever; Gideon thought that one being with so much potential power for good or evil was is too dengerous.  Leo has almost become uncontrollable after the loss of his and Piper's second son, adult Chris.  Leo killed Gideon, and then later was provoked by Barbas into killing another, Zola. Leo is in a world of pain right now, and Piper, Wyatt and baby Chris may be his only hope...
Leo Wyatt protrayed by Brian Krause
Brian was born in El Toro, in Southern California, on February 1, 1969. While in high school, he thought about acting, but was also interested in sports medicine and pursued a semi-professional soccer career with a traveling team.  He started an acting class at 16, and worked in television. When he landed the lead role in a major motion picture film, he gave up soccer for a full-time acting career.
Brian made his feature film debut as Richard in Return To The Blue Lagoon in 1991, with Milla Jovovich, then went on to a starring roles in the films December, Stephen King's Sleepwalkers, The Liar's Club, Kiss Of Fate, Sight Unseen and Mind Games.  On television, Brian has had supporting roles in several telefilms, guest-starred on Walker, Texas Ranger and was Matthew Cory on the daytime drama Another World.
Brian is divorced, lives in the LA area, and has one son, born in 1996.  He enjoys racing cars and golf in his spare time. He and co-star Alyssa Milano dated.

Prue Halliwell is the oldest of the sisters.  Prue had the power of telekinisis (the ability to move things with her mind) and discovered she also had the power of astral projection (to be in two places at once). All the sisters have discovered that their powers increase over time. Prue started out working in a prestigious auction house, Bucklands, but had decided to try her hand at being a professional photographer.  She experienced a certain amount of personal loss, having known the girls' deceased mother, Patty, better than her younger sisters, as well as their father, who left when Prue, Piper and Phoebe were young children; they were brought up by their maternal grandmother ("Grams"). She also lost her first and true love, Andy Trudeau, at the end of the first season to a demon.  Prue's greatest strength was her love for her sisters and her greatest fear was to lose them.   Unfortunately, Prue was destined to be the first Charmed One to lose her life, to a demon named Shax, at the end of season three.
Prue Halliwell portrayed by Shannen Doherty
Shannen Doherty was previously best known for her starring role as Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills, 90210, which was another Aaron Spelling productiion. Ms. Doherty was born on April 12, 1971, in Memphis, Tenn.,where she lived until she was 7. Her family then moved to Los Angeles, and she got her first big acting break when the late Michael Landon discovered her in an episode of Father Murphy. He cast her at age 11 as Jenny Wilder in the series Little House: A New Beginning. She went on to star in Beverly Hills, 90210 from 1990 to 1994, and has also performed in many films, for both the big and small screen.  She starred with Christian Slater and Winona Ryder in the 1989 black comedy "Heathers". Other performances include the teen comedy "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" with Helen Hunt and Sarah Jessica Parker, Ron Howard's "Night Shift," and "Mall Rats," directed by Kevin Smith, "A Burning Passion: The Margaret Mitchell Story," and starred opposite Antonio Sabato, Jr.(who has appeared several times on Charmed) in the Showtime original film "Jailbreakers," directed by William Friedkin. She also starred in the miniseries "Gone in the Night" and "Robert Kennedy and His Times," as well as the television movies "Sleeping with the Devil," "The Ticket", "Friends 'Til the End." and "Satan's School for Girls," a supernatural thriller which also stars Kate Jackson, Julie Benz (Angel's Darla) and Daniel Cosgrove. She directed several episodes of Charmed. Her next big project is starring in the SciFi show Scare Tactics. Ms. Doherty is divorced, after being married  twice, to Ashley Hamilton [1993, 5 month union] and to producer Rick Solomon [2002, married less than a year], and is currently single.  She and former co-star Julian McMahon (Cole) dated.

Leo fake their deaths at the end of season seven.  They are trying to keep a low profile, so the demon world doesn't know they're still around, and Billie, who is also Paige's charge, arrives in their lives at a perfect time.  She agrees to help them out, in exchange for their teaching her.  While the Charmed Ones eventually decide to re-emerge, stronger than ever, Billie remains part of their lives, almost part of the family.  She's learning a lot, and had a mission of her own ~ find the sister that was kidnapped years earlier by a demon.  When Billie finds her sister, Christy, with the Halliwells' help, they all just see a frightened young woman, with powers she can't control.  What they didn't know is that Christy's years with demons have been very productive ones - for the Triad, who have been grooming Christy to join with Billie, and the two will become the "Ultimate Power", a force to be reckoned with, even for the Charmed Ones - who may meet their match in another set of sisters...
Billie Jenkins portrayed by Kaley Cuoco
Kaley Cuoco was born on November 30, 1985, in Camarillo, California, and has been modelling as well as working in commercials since she was a child.  Kaley, at 5'7", is the tallest witch on set, since Holly, Alyssa and Rose are 5'3", 5'3" and 5'5", respectively.  She has appeared in many television series, starting in 1994 with Northern Exposure, and then My So-Called Life, Ellen, 7th Heaven, and guest-co-hosted The View for a week in April of 2005, but it's for her role on 8 Simple Rules... for Dating My Teenage Daughter, with the late John Ritter, that Kaley is best known.  Kaley's also appeared in several films, both big and small screen, such as Virtuosity,  Mr. Murder, 10.5, The Hollow, and is a voice actress in the animated Bratz productions.
Kaley enjoys tennis, which she is very good at, as well as horseback riding and playing drums, and lives in California with her family.

One can use the terms Wicca and Witchcraft almost interchangeably, but they are slightly different.  Wicca is a contemporary Neo-Pagan religion and Witchcraft is the practice of natural magic. Not all Wiccans are witches, and not all witches are Wiccan.

Wicca is a Neo-Pagan religion with traditions that date to pre-Christian (and prehistoric) Earth religions. It is based on a deep respect for nature and the certain knowledge that we do not have the right to exploit it for our own gain. Wiccans are deeply concerned with conservation and ecology, and as in many Neo-Pagan religions, some
Wicca & Witchcraft
Wiccans  believe that both animate and inanimate objects possess a spirit.

Wicca is a celebration of the life-forces of nature as personified by the Goddess and her consort, the God. Unlike Chrisitianity, which is based purely on a masculine divinity, Wicca, for the most part, is more balanced between male and female.

Wicca may include the practice of magick which is defined as the process of causing change through the focusing of our natural powers. It is important to note that magick is natural. [Note the different spelling, adding a "k" ~ this is done to indicate something a little different than stage or show magic.]  There is nothing supernatural about it. Wiccans and witches use certain tools such as spells, visualization, chants, candles, amulets and meditation to help focus, but the power comes from within, it is not in the tools. Our ancestors knew how to use it effectively, but it has been largely forgotten in modern times.

Wicca is not a cult. A cult presupposes blind faith in a central figure whose every word is regarded as ultimate truth, and the utter conviction that no other way or philosophy will lead to this truth. You would be very hard pressed to find a Wiccan anywhere who would blindly follow anyone else. Wiccans are historically very independent people who seek truth from within through rituals, meditation, magic, study and communion with nature. Wiccans respect the right of everyone to worship in their own way. We do not feel that Wicca is the only way -- only that it is our way.

Wicca is not synonymous with Satan worship. The very concept of a supreme evil spirit is alien to Wicca. In fact, most Wiccans do not even believe in Satan. The devil is a Judeo-Christian construct and as such, it has nothing to do with Wicca. The notion that witches worship Satan was propounded by the Roman Catholic Church as it made its way across Europe, in an effort to suppress the native earth-based religions prevalent at the time. They succeeded to the extent that they drove the practitioners of these religions underground where much of their knowledge and traditions were lost. Through the work of the Golden Dawn, as well as anthropological and archeological research, many of these traditions have been rediscovered and incorporated into Neo-Paganism, an umbrella term for most modern earth-based and shamanistic religions.

Wicca does not include flying on brooms. Mostly, witches drive cars or ride bikes, although a flying broom might come in handy during rush-hour traffic.  ;)  There are many rituals which include brooms, however, and these may be the source of the flying-broomstick stories. In parts of Europe, some people run across their fields astride a broom to coax the grain to grow. They may also jump over a broom handle asking the grain to grow as high as their highest leap. It is also common for a ceremonial broom to be used to sweep away negative forces from any area one wishes to cleanse.

I hope these brief explanations will help you begin to understand what Wicca and the Craft really are. There is such a wealth of information on the subject that it is impossible to cover everthing in one little essay. If you are curious, there are hundreds of Internet sites that can help you learn (the Internet's relative anonymity makes it a great way for Pagans to learn and communicate), and many wonderful books from beginning to advanced levels, and every step in between.

It's the second child for actress and her husband

October 27, 2006

Holly Marie Combs
Holly Marie Combs
"Charmed" star Holly Marie Combs has been blessed with another child.

The actress and her husband, David Donoho, welcomed their second son into the world on Thursday afternoon (Oct. 26) in Los Angeles, reports People.

Riley Edward Donoho was born at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and weighed 8.5 lbs. at birth. His older brother Finley Arthur is two years old.

"Everybody's great," says Donoho, 41. "Holly is tired, but she's fine. Riley came right out and as soon as he heard Holly's voice, he smiled. He has hair like Elvis ? a full head of black hair. The doctor said he came out looking like a 2-year-old."

Combs, 32, and Donoho met on the set of "Charmed," where he was working as a key grip. They married on Valentine's Day 2004.

On the show, Combs played Piper, one of three witch sisters along with Shannon Doherty and Alyssa Milano, and then later with Rose McGowan after Doherty left the show.

Combs also appeared on "Picket Fences" and in the ABC Family movie "See Jane Date" opposite Charisma Carpenter.

Season One

The Beginning

The spirit board said...

"To my three beautiful girls
May this give you the
light to find the shadows
The power of three will set you free
Love,
Mom"

The incantation that Phoebe read that made the Halliwells witches:

"Hear now the words of the witches
The secrets we hid in the night
The oldest of gods are invoked here
The great work of magic is sought
In this night and in this hour
I call upon the ancient power
Bring your powers to we sisters three
We want the power
Give us the power"

And thus began the legacy of the Charmed Ones!
