This started off as a poem about a sunflower - yesterday I noticed an amazing sunflower in a garden over the way, half as tall as the house itself, and it happened to be a house we used to live in. Just the fact that it managed to grow and flower
this summer is pretty gobsmackin' in itself (here in UK has been the worse summer on record - almost nonstop grey and rain) M
My daughter would play in that exact place in the garden where the sunflower now is, so somehow this turned into a poem about her as well.
I grew you from seed
earth dark as the night
from the very first
you shone so bright
tho you took from my life
as you grew.
And
grew taller than me
'til we set you free;
and now you give life
back again to me
I watered and fed you
and had to stay strong -
couldn't let this go wrong
like a stake in the ground;
you grew round and around
climbed close and true
but strayed over the fence
to the wild side too
as you reached to the sky
your bright head held high
had a few little hurts
cos you needed to stray
but they only helped you
to find your way
now little bright one
you have up and gone
seeking stranger suns
under distant skies,
and they are making you wise
and so it seems
the world
has taken you on
and you make me laugh
and you make me smile
but I think back awhile
& remember how
there were many times when
the road was so long
and so many miles
and I didn't even know how to begin
had to say a prayer
to the sun and the rain
for my bright sunflower
thought we'd never get through
would we make it to the end?
but here I am with my pen
so thanks to the gods
of earth, sun and rain
that you've turned into my friend
(..and I think I'm still sane).
