O'Reilly If she is helpless and gets large... her parents may not be able to manage her care. I wouldn't agree in all cases, but in this one, I support the parents decision to make the care of her easier. |

I used to think that playing God in any way was wrong, so wrong, but after having my own daughter spend 5 years in hospital, 2.5 of those years she never had even set foot in my home...I have changed my mind! After twenty or so operations, life support and IV feeding for almost 5 years, I'd have to say I would do it all again...plus more if necessary. Unfortunately for her, all her prior illnesses mean that she will not live a long healthy life...but she doesn't know that.....her digestive system will eventually burn out prematurely, it's already working overtime now and I can see the effect it has...stunted growth etc and many years of listlessness, although that's not the case now. Should there ever be a way to artificially help the situation I'd do it, no question as I have done before, and don't regret it.It's only when it's your own child you realize just how far you will go to save and/or better that life. My daughter is 15 now, she has no idea that her life expectancy may only be another 30 years or so, maybe more, maybe less, and it wont be without complications, but she is generally a happy kid even though her body is not 100% problem free, her ongoing troubles have been minimal for years now and she's had a full life just as any other teenager to date.....all we can do is hope it goes on for many more years...should there ever be a possibility to lengthen her life, we will most definitely take it but to date the intestine is almost impossible to transplant....time and future medicine will tell. |

It occurs to me that had this woman had an abortion... there would be no debate. Parents make decisions all the time, that determines the fate of their children. You can even decide what their gender will be. This had to be a difficult thing for these people to do. |

I worked with Autistic children for a brief time, and parents often faced the choice of medicating their offspring into eternal prepubescence. Some of the young men in the school (they were legally required to be accommodated until 19 or 20...can't remember exactly) got very large and strong, but they hadn't the capability to control themselves. Same type of concept with an impaired young woman...without the ability to discern--to choose--why would parents want to allow even the possibility of reproduction. This case is scary when you look at the lengths to which they went to keep her 'young'. That goes another direction I think... |
