As I've journeyed to become a writer, there have been many stages of 'writerliness' (if I may) that sort of act as benchmarks.  I can look back and see points of maturity in my writing, and I can usually associate those steps up with an event, trauma, or knowing.

Events and traumas are easily understood by most people.  But the knowings to which I refer can take different forms...one type of knowing is what happens along a journey.  We learn...and those 'aha' moments are knowings.  Explained by learning.  But other moments, less explainable, are the knowings that happen upon us and take us by surprise.

I had sort of plateaued in my writing...and I was searching for a way to jumpstart the creativity again.  My writing group were issuing challenges to my work, I was attempting to continue to mold and shape what was already there.  It seemed though, that I wanted to move on to something else.

Then came the test.  Now...parts of this are humourous...and that may be revelatory of my own self...lol...and you may want to think twice before delving into the dreams of Jen.  (Though this one's mild compared to the nightmares...)

In my dream, I was in a stark white room.  I was lying there on a white table in the centre of the room, and there was no other furniture.  It was cold and stark...harsh straight lines all around...bare...and I was only covered in a white sheet.  I felt conscious...and was having that dialogue with self that goes like "I know I'm dreaming, but I feel so awake..." "Yeah...but look at _________ there's no way that's real..."

Anyway, I hear the clicking of heels coming down a long hallway.  I try to lift my head to see who it is and I'm unable to move.  My limbs and body are so heavy...but I'm not in pain or unaware...in fact as I said...I'm very lucid.

Through the corner of my eye I begin to see a man approaching.  He's dressed in white...a 3 piece suit...black cane, way cool shoes, and a black bowler hat.  He approaches in a very business like manner...leans over my face so that he's looking deeply into my eyes.

He considers me for a while...then something about him indicates that he came to resolution about something.

It startled me when he spoke, for it was not dream-like.  He merely said:

"I am the keeper of the stories.  Are you ready?"

Despite the cartoonish setting of the dream, there was something incredibly heavy in his question...it filled me with a sense of foreboding and doubt.  And before I could think twice, I said "No."

It all disappeared in a snap.  I couldn't write for months...and began to fear that I never would.  I haven't seen him in dreams, though I've gone looking for him.

And this is the tale of Expecting.

Do you know why you said "No"? and would you recognize him, if you found him?  Seems to me, the keeper of stories might appear in many different forms.

I don't know why, but this account reminds me of something that happened when I was writing A Space in Time.

I researched this for over 3 years. I kept notes and files, with never a clear idea of what I would do with the information. I said I was going to write a book, but saying and doing are 2 different things.

Then one day... I just started writing. I changed direction several times, but finally I was deep enough into the telling that I knew it had a beginning and an end.

A friend of mine was moving to my area. He had to give up his apartment, before his house here was ready to rent. He called and asked me to watch his rottweiler. He was a house dog, very well behaved and huge.

I was really on a roll with my writing and wanted to get at it. I usually don't let any of my pups go in my office, but I was a little apprehensive about leaving him in the house with my pit bull.  Although they had been polite to each other, I didn't want to place either one of them in a situation.

It was raining buckets, so I put a leash on him and we went out to my office. He didn't shake after coming in out of the rain and I thought that was a little odd, but threw a blanket on the floor and he laid down on it.

I was deep into the writing and I heard a deep male voice say, "Are you satisfied with your postition?" I answered automatically that I was and then it sunk in that I'd heard a voice. I turned and looked at the dog. He was sitting up, watching me intently. Feeling a little foolish, I said, "Did you hear that?"

He turned his head toward the door and it was slightly ajar. It shouldn't have been. Now I'm thinking WTF? If anyone had opened the door. I would have heard it and the dog would have reacted. So where did the voice come from? And why was the door ajar?

Did the Keeper of Stories pay me a visit?

I've asked myself over and again why I said no.  The only answer I can come up with, it's a bit painful but honest, is that I wasn't accepting enough of these types of experiences, I wasn't trusting enough of what I knew to be true.  So the gut response was fear.

Fear kills.  Everything it touches...creativity, love, life.  So.  I think that with this, as with many other things in life, I chose the difficult path.  Whether intentionally or not...I chose.

As for your experience Switch...I wouldn't be surprised if you were visited.

Ranae,
Thank you for watching out for us...these conversations tend to get deeper and more personal and I'd hate for someone to take advantage of that in any way.  Thanks, Jen
