Maybe this isn't what you are looking for, but writing it down for comments.

I've had the same dog all of my life. Let me explain.

I had a puppy when I was a toddler and was really attached to it. I don't know what kind it was, mostly mutt. It was a funny little thing and loved water. You could turn on the water sprinklers and he would head right for them.

He liked to sleep on his back. Very seldom would he sleep any other way and not for long. He loved strawberries. Couldn't stand the man next door, so we had to fence the yard to keep him from biting. He would lay in wait for this man to go work and jump out at him. Seemed like a nice enough man and he had a couple of dogs, that liked him fine.

He was brown with medium length hair, but under his neck was a patch of white hair in the shape of a star. On his belly was a freckle the size of a dime. The only one he had.

He was my constant companion and when he died, I was about 10 years old. I made myself sick crying about it and my daddy bought me a little poodle. I couldn't stand it from the moment I saw it and gave it to my sister. She's crazy about it.

Then about 6 months after I lost him, a little dog followed me home from school. He looked nothing like the other one, but I liked him immediately. We advertised in the paper that we had him, but nobody showed up to claim him.

He stayed outside, so at first I didn't know he slept on his back. I did see the white on his chest and even my mother said it looked the same. When I found the freckle on his belly, I couldn't believe it, but everybody said it was just a coincidence. The first time I settled down with a book and a bowl of strawberries and salt(Yeah, I know, funky) He started begging for one. You could not keep him away from the water sprinklers and he was constantly wet and shaking it all over me. Now I was convinced it was my same little dog, reincarnated.

My mother cracked up laughing, when I told her this. The final thing was the man next door. He would dig out of the yard and hide in the same place and try to bite him.  LOL sorry, but it's funny. They were both very small and couldn't have done any damage, but the guy would freak everytime and be on the phone to complain as soon as he got in his house. I had him, until I graduated from high school and he was hit by a car.

Right after I was married I was unloading groceries and this puppy wandered up. He was very young and didn't look old enough to be weaned. He was so fat, he could hardly walk. I went all over the neighborhood, but nobody knew where he came from. I finally decided somebody had dropped him off. There's no way he could have walked very far.

As he began to grow, a white patch of hair developed on his chest in the same shape as the other two had AND a freckle grew on his stomach. He's slept on his back from the first day I had him and he loves strawberries. When we went on vacation, I left him with my Mom.  She said, he headed straight for the water sprinklers. We lived in an apartment, so he'd never seen any before.

While we were gone, he bit the guy next door and Mom told me he jumped out from the same place, the other 2 would hide. We ended up paying the guy's doctor bill and lucky he didn't bring a lawsuit. It wasn't a bad bite, but he's had enough of my dogs.  LOL

All 3 dogs had the same type of personality. I still have this one and have my feet on his stomach as I type.

Well, Fiona, I don't know about dogs (sounds like you've got a pretty case under your feet!), but I'd swear I've had the same cat a couple of times. I had a cat once that ate all the weird food and stuff....bananas (peeling and all), cactus, radishes, potato peelings. Wouldn't touch fish. This fella I have now...he drinks chocolate milk, likes ritz crackers, and strawberry jam...
Either we attract the same characteristic, or we're getting the same animal back again!

I think they do.  And I also think they have a special gift they bring to those who love them.

The story below is fiction based on my personal perceptions and animal myths. Fantasy, but it expresses some of my inner-most  ideas on the subject.  Silly me. just too much imagination.

I had a dog for ten years and was very attached to him. He went everywhere with me. I lost him about 5 years ago. It's not something I can write about, because it still hurts.

I have another dog of the same breed. They look very much alike, but nothing alike. It's something to do with the eyes.  Sometimes, he looks just like him and other times I wonder why I thought that.

This one loves me so much, that if I'm upset about anything... he acts like it's his fault. I can't raise my voice to him at all. It devastes him. He won't eat and stays curled up in a corner watching me with those beautiful brown eyes filled with hurt. No amount of petting makes the look go away.

After several days, he comes out of it, but acts unsure of himself. Usually, he would be playing with a toy or trying to get in my lap. If I've scolded him, he'll come sit beside me, but waits for me to touch him.

When I lost the my other dog, I took all of his toys and packed them away. I don't let the dogs I have now touch them. One night, I was at the computer and happen to glance at my pup. He had one of those toys. He was so happy playing with it and suddenly, the memories of the one I lost came flooding back. I remembered buying and giving it to him, his reactions, everything. It was too much to see another dog touch it and I yelled at him to give it to me.

He staggered to his feet, but was shaking so bad he couldn't walk. He started to whimper and collapsed on the floor. Instantly, I knew he was in bad shape and called my vet. It cost me a couple of hundred dollars, but that was nothing compared to how I felt when I saw his reaction to my displeasure. I've never seen another animal of any kind react like this.

The toy and how he got it are still a mystery.. He can't reach where they are stored. BTW their breed is pit bull.

I had a pit like that switch. I think they all tweek in one way or the other.  Mine would just shake and trimble if he was unsure of me. Or if i left for more that a few moments. I had to hold him close and tight for several moments to calm his nerves. No real reason for it, I never yell or use strong gestures with my animals.
At first I thought you had a border collie. They are so emotionaly dependant on their companions too. Spooky loving eyes.

I haven't thought of replacing my rotties either. I am really enjoying the wild life in my yard. And they trust and like me too. As far as the dog goes, I am waiting for the right one to just stroll in out of the forest. Maybe he will be a border collie this time, so I don't have to work so hard. Rotties really need a strong loving young person because they are hard work and high maintaince.

ghosts tell me souls are reincarnated as the rest of us go into the earth and break down as recycling happens. I won't know if its true till I get there I spose.
Trace from my forum we call Dr doo loittle lol.
She knows dogs well and they know her.

I asked her about this because we exchange alot of stories like above often having similar talents in the area of the unknown.

She is positive dogs choose their owners and cats are magical.
She said it is possible the old soul jumped into the new one but  she is more inclined to  think you will always attract the soul suited to urself eventually so although it may feel like a similar dog its a similar soul.
Dogs have soul groups designed for different humans.
If you choose a dog that hasn't chosen you you will constantly be at war with them.
If you allow a dog to come to you then will have a real relationship with them.
Once a dog chooses you they never leave you there job is to guard you and they will in life or death to the best of their ability and they will seek another soul to find you to continue their role .

Cats however can do anything, they can eliminate powers survive many falls and dissapere as quickly as they arrived.
If you need them they will stay but if you no longer need them they will leave.
Cats have a purpose- they are messengers, dogs are companions.
I should get her to join the forum she keeps wanting me to respond to posts hahah.

I am sorry but all post's with the Wolf eye had to be deleted.

One reason is they are, what is called, Hot-Linked from and educational site - utah.edu
Hotlinking is considered as bandwidth theft and highly frowned upon and can even lead
to prosecution in some cases. The only way you may hotlink an item is if it is from your
own PERSONAL server.

The other reason is the use of the religious symbols, although anyone's particular belief
in certain religions is totally acceptable and even commendable when one stands true to
their particular belief. In a group format such as ours with the wide variety of people &
beliefs, posting symbols repeatedly can easily be misconstrued by others as one trying
to force a belief system on others. To avoid this it is better that they be used only in
conjuction with a story being told or things of that nature.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

Sincerely,
Ranae'   (Assitant Manager WSAM)
