Medical marijuana clinics raided in L.A.
Federal raids reflect disparity with state law that allows prescription use

LOS ANGELES - Federal drug agents raided nearly a dozen medical marijuana clinics in California, seizing several thousand pounds of processed marijuana, along with weapons and money, authorities said.

Several people were detained, although no arrests were made after five dispensaries in West Hollywood and six others in Venice, Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley were searched Wednesday, said Sarah Pullen, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The raids highlighted a conflict between a California state law and the federal drug agency.

California voters in 1996 approved the Compassionate Use Act, which makes marijuana available by prescription for medicinal uses. The DEA, which does not recognize California laws legalizing medical marijuana use, has recently increased its enforcement.

Under seal

Pullen declined to provide details of the latest investigation, saying the search warrants remained under seal.

"But obviously we are looking for marijuana and other illegal drugs, marijuana edibles and evidence of ongoing criminal activity and anything from paperwork to documents ?you name it," Pullen said.

City officials in West Hollywood said they were surprised by the action, learning of the raid as it was happening. City spokeswoman Helen Goss said West Hollywood has a "long-standing commitment" to the use of medical marijuana for people suffering from illnesses like HIV and AIDS.

Agents in bulletproof vests, gloves and face masks left a West Hollywood storefront with boxes and trash bags filled, as about 50 protesters booed and shouted "states' rights."

At one dispensary, The Farmacy on Santa Monica Boulevard, amateur videographers and others mobbed officers filling three cars with evidence.

"Today's enforcement operations show that these establishments are nothing more than drug-trafficking organizations bringing criminal activities to our neighborhoods and drugs near our children and schools," said Ralph W. Partridge, head of the DEA in Los Angeles.

Is it legal for federal enforcement to over-ride a state law?

That's the problem isn't it.  When I was home with mom last winter, there were arrests, because the CA law provided for the supplying of MJ to people with prescriptions, but NOT the making of a profit.   lol  Is THAT the American way???  rofl...jeez...talk about a loophole.  Anyway...There is a problem with the tension between the states' rights to govern themselves and the Federal Government stepping in and going another direction.

It all has to do with the governments greed and the fact that so many politicians are in the pockets of the pharmaceutical companies. Why is it that under no circumstance is "Pot" legal? There is a multitude of other drugs, Oxycontin, Ludes, Percs, etc. that are all mind altering drugs. We can but the other ones with a prescription but, we can't get pot even with a prescription. Why is it? I'll tell you why. You can grow "Pot" in your kitchen. This means the drug companies wouldn't make any money. God forbid we treat illness with something that God gave us, instead of some chemical man created that causes a whole plethora of side affects, which in turn requires more chemicals, all made by the drug companies who own half the government. Pot is no more damaging than alcohol, yet alcohol is legal. Again why is that. Alcohol is not easy to make yourself so you buy it. When buying it you pay taxes. It is all based in greed. We have a natural treatment which has been proven to assist in the treatment of some illnesses but, the powers that be don't care.
I am not condoning the use of pot, BUT, even for recreational use, I don't see it as anymore of a problem than alcohol, which IS legal.
As for the question of the legality of the Feds over riding state laws. The law was voted in by the people. The Feds don't care what the people want. They never do and I don't think they have in a century. Want an example of that? George Bush is our President. The popular vote went to Gore. The stupid Electoral vote (which needs to go) over rode the peoples choice.

Ok I am now just blithering. I get riled up when it comes to Big Brothers control.

Ok I am not done. lol.

In the days of prohibition when the moral right made booze illegal it gave organized crime (mafia) the strength to do pretty much what they wanted. In time the government saw the error in their ways recinded it's stranglehold on the booze. Of course organized crime struggled temorarily, they did get back on their feet thru prostitution, unions, gambling and ultimately drugs.
The unins have been pretty much cleaned up. Gambling has largely become legal. Ok that's 2 of the 4.
Prostitution is legal in Las Vegas and yet there are no raids by the Feds for that. (no drug companies involved is why). I will return to this subject in a moment.
So drugs are what is left. Granted alot of drugs are killers and should be illegal for recreational use. There was a politician (Can't remember her name) who had suggested the legalization of MY in oredr to take away some of the drug lords power. As I stated in my previous post. Pot is not all that bad all in all. Legalization would help get rid of one of the 4 problem areas that the government was indirectly responsible for creating in the first place. That being todays version of organized crime (street gangs).
Ok now back to prostitution. Prostitution is illegal because of moral beliefs. Morals are based in religeon. We in America are supposed to have freedom of religeon. So in essence, the fact that prostitution is illegal is an infingment of constitutional rights. Ok so granted, the current state the life of the average prostitute is not very good. This is largely caused by the pimps they have to deal with. Pimps have their strength in the fact that prostitution is illegal. See where I am going? Did you know that america is one of only a few countries in the world that has made prostitution illegal? There are some countries who have made it a licensed profession. What gives any government the right to tell anyone what they can and can't do with their body? Yet another restrictive law that strokes my fur the wrong direction. It hurts nobody. One person gets satisfication, the other gets to eat. The problem with that is what?

Ok now I need to go chill out again.

 I just hate Big Brother.

Trig, luv, what do you think about Big Brother?

I hear you loud and clear.  And I think you're on to something...the thing is...pot is the hell of a lot more 'natural' than some chem concoctions they put in gel capsules to 'fix' us...

Sad that everything boils down to the almighty buck and who's makin it (er...never me it seems!)

Have to agree with all you both said.

In my humble opinion, this issue has gone way past whether we have the right to use it, medicinally or not. (of course we should have) but...............

Global warming is the single most important issue of this century. We need more trees and less plastic.

Hemp can replace anything made of plastic or cotton. It is not damaging on the environment.

Greed is definately the stumbling block. In Oz it is still illegal in most places, to grow or use.
There is a group of us in this country who grow it and give it away (yes, you read right, we give it to those who need it.) The constabulary don't bother us because we are a non profit group (albeit illegal). Mind you if we stepped out of line and tried to make money out of it they would be down on us like a ton of bricks, and rightly so.

In a nutshell, we are stepping on the toes of the Petrochemical companies and the Pharmaceutical companies.

Anything that can be made from timber can be made from Hemp. Anything that can be made from plastic can be made from Hemp.
Think about it!!!!
Greed is not a strong enough word I'm afraid. It's more like total disregard for the welfare of the human race.
