The Librarian

Stella's a librarian
She looks to the world
like a dusty book
archived in order
behind her bespectacled smile.

She's quiet
as you would expect
in a cardiganed
slippered
hushed sort of way.

Beneath that buttoned up
Laura Ashley blouse
beats a heart of passion.
Beneath the long hand
that strokes her ginger cat
there is that...

Stella stands in her sensible shoes
her glasses perched
on the end of her nose
surveying the quiet aisles
that got left
by the internet

the homeless keep warm
 in the dusty corners
the retired researchers
are scribbling like fifth formers
waiting on a promise.

Stella keeps watch
by watch & by clock
and nursery reading group
at two of the clock
Between the odd cup of tea
and cider with rosie

Stella's day passes
quietly hushed
in a cellophane
wrapper
gathering dust
but only on the outside
inside
shes still pristine
