Just a short story to make you think twice about.....

I thought the elevator was empty.
Floor nine should take about ten seconds.
But as I pressed the button,
He stepped forward, saying,
"The basement for me"
"I didn't see you come in!" I gasped.
"Anyway, we have started going up now"
As the elevator slowed down,
He moved closer and pressed Basement again.
My heart jumped. "Why did you do that?"
"We were there already!"
"No" he said quietly, "We are both going to the basement"

With that, the elevator started to shudder,
Then, with a screeching wail, it stopped dead.
"What did you do?" I yelled at him.
"I was actually at my floor, and now...
I'm trapped in an elevator with a stranger!"
"We are going down" he said softly, "Just wait"

The cabin shook again and suddenly it rocked
so much, that I was thrown against him,
but instead, my head thumped hard
against the wall. The elevator began to fall...fast!
I screammed as I realised what was happening.

A few seconds later...it was silent.
The violent impact had broken the uprights
and walls were bent and twisted.
The decorative wall mirrors
were strewn around everywhere.
One of the shards had pierced his chest.

He stood over me, looking solemn
and, he held his hand out to me.
I took it, and was amazed that I could stand.
As we stepped out of the mess, he said,
"The same thing happened five years ago"
"You have been lucky then, haven't you,
to walk away from this twice" I jested.

With that, I glanced over my shoulder
and, I screamed...and I screamed again, and again.
There I lay, as he must have done five years ago,
Smashed up and broken...
Amidst the wreckage
and the fragmented mirrors.
