Thats my Great Uncle Robert Allen seated, with one of his Mates, Ed Marks. Both local lads recruited from the Quill Lakes region of Saskatchewan, Canada. Robert enlisted in Jan, 1916 in Wadena with the 214 Bn Wadena Wildcats, and the following year ended up with the 28th Bn CEF in France. Sadly he was terribly wounded in the Battle of Passchendaele on 06 Nov 1917, loosing both legs and left arm to enemy shrapnel. Whilst being carried out, he kept his sense of humour, saying "Well lads, it looks like I'm going home". He died the next day and is buried in Belgium. Aged only 21, he was never married. In his home town of Quill Lake, he was well liked and respected, enjoying baseball, and being invovled in the community. He is remembered at the RCL memorial in the village of Quill Lake. Ed survived the war, and grew to be an old man before passing away in the late 1970s. |
