Richard Marlin, was from Ontario, and joined the 38th Ottawa Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. He, like many other was keen to join up,and was seeking adventure and travel. He was a keen sportsman, and only 20, at the time of his death. On the 9th of April 1917, his Battalion was pivitol in the attack on Vimy Ridge, France. Sadly, Richard was killed in action not far from the Unit's objective. He was killed outright, on the 9th of April, and is buried in a communal grave with two other members from his Battalion. Vimy Ridge was the battle, that many are conviced that was the birth of Canada. For many years the Ridge could not be taken by the French or the British. The Canadian Corps did it in one day! If you wanna read a good book about the Ridge, best to try Pierre Burton's 'Vimy'. This battle proved that Canada was not just a mere colonial force which was to provide fodder for the English, but could easily be used as a reliable and tenacious army. |
