This is the Commonwealth War Grave's Commission marker for Richard. It should be noted that he is in a communal grave. His name and number are second on the marker. Also, see how close the markers are together. This usually notes a mass grave, as casualties at the time they were 'KIA' were sometimes buried together. They were buried where they fell, or near where they were killed.Sometimes buried in this fashion for convenience, and other times due to identification problems, i.e. a group of men, hit by a shell. Knowing who they were, but as grim as it sounds, being so disfigured, not knowning what belonged to whom. So it is difficult to know how Richard was actually killed. The only thing known is he was killed not far from the objective of his regiment. He was only 20 years old. |
