The Elven Star
The seven-pointed star, also known as the Elven Star, or Faerie Star, has many meanings depending on whom you ask. We can understand, by our studies of the Elven Tradition, that the Elven Star bear a huge meaning for the Elves. Here is a thought about this important symbol.
The seven directions (north, south, east, west, above, below, within), the seven elements (earth, air, fire, water, life, light, magick) represents universal balance combined with the trinity bound within harmony. All is well, and in balance. This symbol let us make an attunment with Nature wile we are meditating upon it.
The Sign of Man is the pentagram or five-pointed star. Its associations are elemental (fire, earth, wind, water) leading to the spiritual (spirit). The pentagram express the ideal and sought for emotional, physical, and spiritual balance of humanity:
The passion and energy of fire.
The voice, soul, and thoughts of wind.
The dynamic, deep nature of water.
The stability and life of earth, as wrought from those elements before.
The spirit in Harmony with its self and its world.
The elven star, however, the septagram, is similar yet highly different. While many of its points hold elemental symbolism, it is more complex.
Point 1: The Sun.
This is the realm of the Light, the life. The sun is the primary force of life and creation on Earth or most any other world. Without it, elven and humanoid life as we know it would not exist. Its influence affects us in uncountable ways, ranging from climate to psychology to its interaction with other bodies in our system. At the same time, there are the magical symbols associated with the sun: life, energy, creation, fertility, power--but at the same time remember that the sun has its negative aspects as well: drought, extreme heat, radiation, cancer, and so forth. Same things for all the other points.
Point 2: The Wood.
This is the realm of the Earth. Most elves feel a deep connection to forests and woods in general. Trees are considered kin, cousins and brothers. Elves can see a deep secret hidden in the branches of trees, and understand the power and nature of trees and woods. There is also earth elemental symbolism here. This is constance, stable, ever changing and ever singings nature. It is also bounty, pleny, fertility, ever returning to it. This is home and sweet Mama.
Point 3: The Sea.
This is the realm of the Water. Many elves also have a connection to the sea, and water elemental powers are very strong naturally. Some may be reluctant to know the sea or feel it, perhaps forgetting the ocean as one of the great forces of many worlds. This is the emotions, the psych, our feeling and deep secrets. This is were we all goes after our bodies have been return to Mother Earth. A big travel will wait for us which will take us Home.
Point 4: The Moon.
This is the realm of the Moon, which can be viewed as Magic. Magic is integral to the lives of all elves, whether it be the simple but profound magic of a snowflake or the more involved magic of rhymes, runes, visions, and such hocus pocus (but magic is so much more than hocus pocus, Elves knows that). It is not only a matter of understanding magic, but of living magic. Moon takes us to this understanding.
Point 5: The Fire.
Just as the sun is responsible for our existence, so too does the fire, which is almost as important as the role of the sun. Fire is the eternal flame of life. It is the power of courage, faith and burning love. Consider how different life would be without the ever burning light of the sun or the ever dancing blood of our dear planet. The shooting rays of lightnings are the symbols of the act of creation. Only light shine in the dark of the night, so are the stars in the sky.
Point 6: The Wind.
This is the realm of the Air. Many elves also have a strong connection to the wind and air elements in general. This is the ways of the intellect, of philosophy, of the thinking, the inner realm of dreams. At the same time, the wind is responsible for helping germinate the world's plants and forests--it is the essence of weather, and so much more.
Point 7: Connection.
This is the realm of the Spirit. Ultimately, elves must remember the idea of Connection--of our connection to ours'elves, others, the world, the land, reality, magic, and the universe. We are creatures of connection, and our power is tied to our connections to all things. This point is the aspiration, the harmony, the balance of all the others elements explained above and perhaps of the others, just as the fifth point of spirit is the aspiration of the pentagram and humanity. This is the point that include all other beings such as the faeries, the dragons, the werewolves and otherkins. This is the Web of Life!
