Hi Paul...Hope you can help. Ricco is my beloved Yellow-Nape Amazon Parrot, which I just had to the vet. I was orginally told I had a male, then someone else told me a female, now the vet is having her/him tested with a DNA sample. Can't wait to hear the results. Main thing I want to know is if she/he is happy, and if there is something wrong? She/he is doing lots of feather picking and hasn't been talking quite as much. I'm a very worried FeatherMom. Have to add that she/he is 29 years old (still a young chick in Parrot years). I would really appreciate any info you can give if my parrot will talk to you. Ellie Here is a pic: |

I'm stumped about why she/he has suddenly started doing this behavior. We don't have any young children in the house, or visiting, that would cause a problem of noise, or putting their hands in the cage. The only people who do are family members. We have dogs in the house, but Ricco was raised with them, and actually interacts with them by getting them to howl and sing along with her/him. If the dogs bark, so does Ricco. Dogs have been a part of her life for 29 years. Don't think they would be stressing her now. Thanks for the pointers. Think I need to wait for the test results from the avarian veterinarian I had her to. Ellie |

Hi Ellie, Sorry it took me so long to reply. Has been busy around here. Ricco laughs about the dogs, says that their interaction is fun and she likes to get them to "sing". I don't know if Ricco is male or female but Ricco sort of seems female as I talk. The only stressor she mentions is the trip to the vet. I got a shivering sensation as if it was not fun. Also she mentions being able to move about more, bigger cage, flying about the house, whatever. Don't know if this is possible or not (her words) but woudl be nice. She also seems to want to get closer to the dogs, (don't know if that is possible or safe) but I get the image of her with them. Paul |

Paul...Thank You for contacting Ricco. She is doing pretty good and she has stopped pulling out her feathers. The trip to the vet was a must. I know she doesn't like the idea of a check-up, nail trim, blood draws, or an injection, but it has to happen once per year. LOL...At Ricco having fun with the dogs. She has been around them all of her life and really enjoys getting them to "sing", but I don't really think allowing her to get closer to them is a very good idea...even if wanted...because of safety concerns for all. The bigger cage is a possibility, but not flying around the house. Again, that is safety concerns. I still haven't heard back from the vet concerning Ricco's DNA test. So, I'm still waiting, but I have the strangest feeling that I do have a female. If the test shows Ricco to be a boy as was originally told to me, that is fine too, but it will be a surprise. I'll let you know. Oh, yes, gotta tell you that Ricco is a wonderful talker. She is so clear and does communicate what she wants sometimes, but of course, not everything. Thanks Again! Ellie |

Paul...The DNA test came back on Ricco Parrot... LOL...Our vet said "CONGRATULATIONS! You have a little BOY!". So, the masculine name is absolutely perfect. Ellie |
