Hello everyone. My husband and I are considering another parrot for our home. We currently have a 7 yr old daughter, 2 quakers, 3 dogs and a cat. We are looking for any info on the umbrella cockatoos. A friend of mine had one, and we both absolutely fell in love with her. She was about 2 yrs old, and would lay on the couch and cuddle and snuggle, and was just an all around love bug. The only thing we are really worried about is we will both be working full time. We are trying to get shifts that are opposite one another, so that we don't have to put our 7 yr old in daycare. Our quakers have adjusted nicely to our routine, I hand raised one of them. I have heard so much that the cockatoos are neurotic and one of the most re-homed parrot. Is that true? We are settled down, will not be having any more children, and have absolutely no intentions of moving. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you. Stacy |

If it's a cuddle velcro bird you want then the Too is that bird. But a lot of research does need to be done as to whether the time would be available to have such a bird as yes, they are rehomed frequently due to the noise level and when hormones kick in they can become biters as is with any bird. Having a young child in the home at those times could create problems but the hormone phase does pass in a few weeks. I have a few and lean towards that species but I am home all day long and can give them the attention needed and they can be demanding for attention. Too2 |

Thanks! for the reply! Yes, I think the cuddly velcro bird is what we are looking for. We all adore our qp Casey (my other qp has only been with us about a month, he was a "pity" purchase from a petstore, and has a few behavioral and fear issues we are working on), but my husband often complains that she's not cuddly. She LOVES to climb all over, but she is in constant motion. LOL Always finding something to get into. My daughter has been raised around several different types of animals in rescue type situations. I volunteered with a rescue group back home, and took in a couple of fosters temporarily. She would often go with me to the rescue center and help me clean, feed and share lovings with the dogs and cats. My only fear with the too is that we won't be home all day long, but we will hopefully have overlapping schedules. Thats what we did at home, we had our schedules set so someone was usually home. If they are raised in a routine, say for example out of cage time in the mornings for 2 hours, then again in the evenings for 2 - 3 hours, with a big cage and lots of toys for the times they are in cage, do they do ok? As long as it is kept routine? Also, I have read that once they reach sexual maturity, their tempermants completely change from sweet and loving to vicious and basically mean. Is this true? We don't want to mess up and end up torturing our new baby by mistake. This is the cage I am planning on getting. Someone told me it was a good cage for toos'. http://www.fantasticpetstore.com/cornercage Is this cage ok? Thanks again! Stacy |

That cage certainly would be a space saver. I see a great feature with it, the very large door. The latches may be an issue as they can escape most doors and I have those same latches on the U2's cages but they don't bother them.....so far!! It would be for a U2 or smaller, right? for that size it would do well. I guess you are only in the market for a "corner" cage? if funds are available I'd go for larger and another locking system. As to turning mean and vicious!! well that's not true and some even remain sweet during hormone season. My females do, the big males do not but they give plenty of warning when it's about that "time" or times of the year. Time frame sounds good for out with the family and cuddle time. Usually if they know the routine and it's kept up they can learn to amuse themselves but as with all birds and the Too's in particular, as babies they can be spoiled with cuddling and petting and they can't understand when they don't get it all day long. So it is important to not want to "spoil" the bird, but let it understand cage time is also necessary...... Too2 |

Thanks again! Yes, the cage would be for the U2. I am also planning on ordering one each for my quakers. I'm not planning on getting my 2 for probably another 6 months to a yr, so I have plenty of time to shop around. I am not looking only for a corner cage, I just fell in love with that one because it is so big. The corner part was a plus, but not an absolute necessity. If you know of any other good places to order a cage from, please let me know. Thanks again! Stacy |

OK Stacy . If I remember Enterprise it is the "sue" capital of the world.....lol I believe I spent some time there with the daughter in law as she is in the legal business and the old homes were fantastic and didn't they have "squares' with statues of the southern Generals? She is from Panama City and I'm down the road a bit . If you're coming west on Ten then I'd be after Navarre and before Gulf Breeze, the east side of Pensacola.. Too2 |
