Hi!

My name is Judith Scarl and I am currently doing a Ph.D. in behavioural biology at Cornell University in New York, USA. I'm looking for some galah owners that might be willing to help me out by measuring their galah's neck! Let me explain...

I will be starting fieldwork on galahs (Rose-Breasted Cockatoos) in Australia in July. My project will be looking at galah vocalizations and various galah behaviors. As part of my project, I would like to radiocollar a few individuals so that I can track them throughout their range. In order to do this, I need to fit radiocollars onto these birds, but I do not know their neck measurements! I need to order the collars before I leave for Australia in July, so unfortunately I cannot wait until I get to Oz to take neck measurements. (By the way, the collars are very light and the birds preen them under their feathers; they get used to them very quickly and don't seem to negatively affect the birds at all!) I'm trying to contact galah owners to see if they will help me out by measuring their birds' necks!

Would you be willing to help me out? (By the way, I'd be more than happy to send on pictures of wild galahs in Australia after this field season!) If you wouldn't mind helping, here is what to do:

Take a piece of string and put it gently around the galah's neck. The string needs to go under the feathers (if your galah lets you pet it, this should not be a problem) and be against the skin but not tight. Your galah's neck should be straight but not extended (if you give it a stick to bite on and pull gently on the stick, this should do it). Measure the part of the string that goes around the galah's neck. I would need the neck measurement, the age, the sex, and the weight (if you know it) of your bird.

I know this is a big favour to ask, but if there was any way you could obtain this information, it would be a huge help. Thank you so much for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon. Please let me know if you have any questions about my project or measuring birds!

Thank you so much,
Judith Scarl

Sounds like an interesting project. I would really like to see the wild galah photos!
I'll have to measure when I get home tonight , but would be glad to help with this! ( not quite sure how Rudy Toots will feel about it though!) Nan

Hi Nan,

Were you able to measure Rudy Toots' neck? If you're still willing to
help out, it would be a huge help; I actually only need one or two more
neck measurements before I can order the transmitters! Anyway, let me know,
and I really appreciate it... and I hope that Rudy Toots doesn't mind too
much! :)

Thanks again,
Jude
