This toy is sold at Petco and Petsmart it's a JW Insight toy

this is the toy in question.

This is what happens when a sun conure throws the toy off his cage, and the toy breaks open. It looks like it is filled with sand, right? Wrong! That stuff is metal! It was reported as being shrapnel like!
Here is the original post-
Well, as much as I dislike saying it, I've found another 'trusted' toy that shouldn't be played with by our parrots.

The toy is has a pink base that is shaped like a flying saucer and has 3 semi-hard plastic things coming up out of it. The plastic things end in little balls. It is designed as a foot toy.

These things come in 3 sizes-that I know of-there are tiny ones for budgies and the like, mid-sized ones for 'tiels and small conures, and then there are the large ones.

On that particular package there is a picture of an Eclectus-I suppose that is to advertise the size of the bird that is to play with the toy.

I got that one for Harry. It's a little big for him, but I figured he wouldn't destroy it as quickly as the ones for 'tiels. Boy was I wrong.

The scary part is what was inside of the base of the toy when he did destroy it. A substance that looked like dried clay mixed with pellets of metal. Some of those pellets weren't just pellets, but shards like shrapnel.

Fortunately Harry ruined his by throwing it from the top of his cage down to the hardwood floor. Had a bird the size of say, an Ekkie been playing with it though, it may have ended up with a mouthful of that stuff.

The base isn't secured together very well, it has a seam that runs through the it and it just snaps shut.

I just thought I would let you all know about this thing in case any of you have one. I didn't think to take a picture of it before I threw it out, but I got mine at Petco and I've seen several stores carry them
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought I should post this, seeing as other members on that forum had them and immediatly disposed of them upon hearing this.
Anything we can do to keep our parrots safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*I know the original post said that the owner did not have a chance to take a picture, but when she posted this, another bird owner who had this same toy for her bird, removed that toy from her birds cage, broke it open and took a picture of the result.
I have posted this on other forums as well, and other people have opned their toys to find the same substance in them. Some have asked if the small toy has the same crud in it as the other sizes- yes it does. The one originally talked about is a large, but the one pictured (with the stuff spilling out of it) is a small.
I decided to cross post this to as many sites as possible. I don't know if this is metal inside or not, but I won't be buying one of these! Nan

thank you Nan!! i just got max's off him and split it,the substance was all impacted inside his.probably as a weight? his was the smaller one.
on the back cover i looked to se what writing if any on it..it says 'design patent pending'...not sure if that has any influence or not.
its in the bin now(garbage) and max wasnt too happy about it going, one of his favourites.he'll get over it though.rather have him sulking than ill.

That is terrible and who would guess the weight contents.

The hard plastic pacifiers I can't even give to Magnolia as she is able to break them and once broken it is as sharp as glass. Thank goodness nothing shatters, just clean breaks...Even though I doubt the smaller birds could break them, I can't take the chance she won't sneak into cages and break another one.  So those had to be trashed

I purchased that toy for Kaya and didnt even have a chance to see what was inside it.  She promptly pulled off the little ball ends of the extended tentacles and I freaked...thinking that she would swallow it.  Luckily, she spit it out for a more tempting pistachio.  I too, was fooled by the picture of the large bird playing with it.  My amazon demolished it in less than 30 seconds! I am glad that I was supervising her play session with it.  I promptly brought it back to Petco for a full refund of this defective product.

This sort of thing is so scary! It's really too bad that there isn't some sort of safety standards that pet toy manufacturers have to meet.

I didn't know this either. We had one of those a while ago when we had parakeets. I don't think they had the capacity to break it, and never did, but boy! What a scary thought!
The only "plastic" toys I give Mac (my zon) is those "bulletproof" things (he has a treasure chest and a can o' peanuts). His beak is just TOO strong for me to think about giving him something less substantial. Even his treasure chest (the older toy) has scratch marks in it from his beak! Eevie the ekkie hasn't examined the strength of her beak, little nibbles is all she does, but after this, I think I'll just keep her away from those toys too!
