You do mean goldfinches, not Gouldian finches?  I didn't know anyone bred goldfinches. I've never heard of this, but would be very interested to hear about it if you have experience. Which goldfinch are you wanting, American or European?

I think that goldfinches are one of the protected songbirds in the US and if I am correct, it would be illegal to keep and breed them without a special license.

Feathers (our member here) will know for sure about the licensing.

I am also interested in getting a pair of GoldFinches - either European or American. 

 

I ended up handraising four little House Finches last spring after we removed a dead cedar from our yard and discovered too late that there was a nest of four featherless baby birds in it.  We are going to build an outside aviary to house them 6 months of the year.  I would like to add a couple of more colorful birds that would be hardy enough to survive outside with the House Finches.  The goldfinches are the only ones that have been recommended to me.

 

So, if anyone knows of any goldfinch breeders -- or breeders of another variety of finch that would be hardy enough to withstand outside temperatures in southern Alberta Canada from April through to October -- I would be very intersted in hearing from you.
