Hi ya all!  I read somewhere on the net abut using steam cleaners for cleaning bird cages and what a great job it does in half the time but can't remember where I read the articles.  Of course I want one to use thru out the house as well as we have a grand son who has all kindsof allergies, so I need one that also sanitizes,  but can't remember where the people said they bought theirs or what kinds.  By any chance would it have been someone on BirdBrainz.  I've looked but can't find any disscussions on the topic.  If it was anyone here, would you mind repeating the kinds used, & where to get them?

Hi Layne

On the left sidebard, under All Messages, is a topic "Nan's Tips" (http://groups.msn.com/BirdBrainz/nannerstips.msnw).  In there I discovered a few threads with cage cleaning tips. Some of the threads that include cage cleaning info/tips are:

There have been several discussions on the boards about steam cleaners, but I looked under "Questions N Tips" an don't see them there. But then, a lot of folks don't use the separate message boards, so that makes it harder to hunt down something posted previously.

Annie, do you know where that information might be? Anyone?

Abby

I didn't go check any of the links Abby gave you so this might even be in there.

I made the mistake of buying too strong of a steam cleaner.  It literally blasts everything everywhere and far.  So far me I stopped using it.  I wanted to be able to clean it while it was in the house.  Thinking it would be easy.  It is easy to get stuff off but it is too much a mess.  So just went back to keeping it basically clean everyday by hand.  Just a habit. The cage won't go easily outside so trays and grates sometimes get cleaned with the hose.

I only have one Bird so this works for me.  He is also trained to poop on his playstand (trained himself) with paper.  The cage has paper too on top of grate.  He doesn't touch it.  So the steam machine was a waste for me but I think if it was a smaller weaker one it would have worked for me.  Also I clean his cage while he is on it everyday if there is a mess so steam is kinda a bother getting him away from the cage so he doesn't get hurt.

Might work for your situation but for mine it is too much of a hassle.

Indy

I can't remember where the many discussions are. Could have been on another site.

Let me tell you what I found when I used one.

Mine is a little tiny canister vac looking steamer called The Mouse. I can do floors or cages or anything else with it.
My birds are in a 13 x 13 feet room. By the time I had cleaned one single cage out of 7 the humidity level in the room was over 85 % and the temp was above 90 degrees and it made me so sick I could hardly breathe. I had to leave and let it cool down before continuing. Not everyone reacts like me and not every room is closed enough to cause that kind of humidity buildup.
Then the cages dried there was a white dust, kind of sticky, on every cage. I had to wipe every one of them down with damp cloths. I used distilled water so it was not lime deposit.

The steam itself sterilizes because it is so hot it will burn you and your birds. The birds have to be taken from the cages before cleaning and placed where the steam can't reach them.

There is a small handheld one called Scunci, advertised on As Seen on TV. I think some here use it. Mine is called The Mouse.
Type in small steam cleaning machine in your browser and look at the ones that show. Several different styles at different pricing. There are many brands and styles now.
As Seen On TV has a website, too, so you can look at the Scunci there.
Hope you get a good one.
Annie

When I was looking for one a few years ago, I did almost all my research and comparisons by looking at the ones for sale on Ebay.  I wanted one more for cleaning floors, than for cages.  I ended up buying one of the Hoover floormate cleaners instead.  And for cages, I have a pressure washer.

I loved my Hoover Floormate for my tile floors, but the base plate broke after just a few uses. Replacement part broke immediately, too. It was made of brittle plastic. I ordered a new machine and it was broken when it arrived.

Layne wants to sanitize cages so pressure washing won't do what she wants.
My solution to that was to mix liquid Tide detergent with Clorox in hot water, mop it on the cages and 20 minutes later mop it on again. I keep them wet with the solution for at least 30 minutes. Then pressure rinse and rinse and rinse. My cages have never looked so good.
I can't get my cages outdoors without help so they get really bad before I can hogtie hubby and make him help me. Then he sneaks away and I can't get them back indoors til he comes back home.

Ha! Sounds just like someone I know...............seems they just disappear some where, huh?? Ha
I can roll mine out into the back yard from the sun porch, and is no problem in the summer months, but I can't do that in the winter when it's so cold (or won't) so I usually just give it a good wipe down in the winter, but would like some way to do a thorough cleaning like I do in the summer.  The TKO does a great job cleaning yet is not harmful to birds.  Thought a steam cleaner would be the perfect cleaning solution in the winter as well as being able to use it for other things.

Can't find the "Mouse" or the Scunchie" (?)  Will go to ebay & see what they have.

Layne, it may work really well for you. My birdroom is next to the living room and the heat and air system is on the other side of the opposite wall so it's really hemmed in. Gets really hot or really cold in there. I even have my floor vents covered with layers of foil to prevent the hot and cold from bothering the birds.

The spelling is Scunci. Try typing Scunci steamer in your browser. It's a handheld one, not a canister type.
