Hi, I just got two great parakeets but their wings aren't clipped. I would like to take them out of the cage without them being in danger of flying all over the house. Has anyone clipped their birds wings themselves? Just wondering and looking for advise. Thanks!
I do my birds, but I watched the breeder do it before I tried it. She showed me how and explained where to and where not to cut. Local pet stores will usually do it for a small fee and show you how. Good luck and Congratulations!!! Pictures pictures!!!!!
thought I'd throw in a picture of my fat lil Shyster. He's an English Budgie, that's why his head and chest seem bigger. I think it's actually just bigger fluffier feathers.
I clip all my birds myself. When I started with birds, no one clipped. I had a truly great working knowledge of feathers, feather growth and placement before I even attempted it myself. I agree with Tivabird. Watch someone else do it first. Most breeders, pet stores and vets will clip and let you watch.
Lady Di, You definitely need to let an experienced person clip your birds. Parakeets are quite small and can be difficult to handle. If you clip a wrong feather you can cause your bird to bleed to death. Also you can suppress their breathing if you hold them the wrong way. Since you are trying to build trust, it is always better to let someone else do the "mean stuff" so your babies will not hold it against you. It doesn't cost much at a pet shop or vets, and I would say always take your birds in for a clip. Hope this helps.
