I agree with Crystal that it probably is a dietary issue.
Is this the first clutch the hen has laid? Are they fertile by that I mean is there a male or are you speaking about a single female and what species?

Also in the wild, they would not want to signal to potential predators where their nest is, so it would make sense that they would dispose of non-viable eggs in such a way.
