Penny is a year and a half. She is home all alone during the day for about 6 hours. She doesn't chew on things she doesn't mess in the house. She has two T.V.'s on with two differant channels on. (so she can choose). Is she bored? We are thinking about getting her a friend. Does she care that she is alone?  What type of dog should we get?

If you are only gone 6 hours dogs usually just sleep till you get back. If she get plently of exercise when you are home she probably doesn't mind.
She sounds wonderful. She might like being the one and only.
Sometimes getting another dog can bring on a lot of problems. We took in an abused dachshund 3 years ago and for several weeks life wasn't very pleasant around here. Fights, jealousy, marking etc. It's seldom easy to bring a new dog into the home.

well, we got gus in may 2000 and then in may 2001, almsot one year later, we got gabby..she was harassed by gus from day one as he could not understand what this creature was that followed him very where...well, he would charge her when she was outside and everytime she went out, she would wait for him to go with her..gus is now almsot 7 and gabby 6 and they are so bonded it is not even funny..to this day, she still will not go out until he goes with her...i put there food down for them to eat and he will gobble his down and when he is done, then she will eat...when they are outside together, they both want in but if gabby is there first, she will step aside and let him in first and then she will go in...they sleep together and always have since we brought her home...what one does not think of, the other one does..she rules over him though in some things...if he even looks like he will try to eat her food, she growls and goes after him..today it was so funny..we have two 8ft leather sofas in the family room...gus was on a pillow sleeping...gabby got up on the other couch and laid on her pillow...after a few minutes, i guess she decided that she wanted his pillow...so we jumped over to the other couch and made this weird noise to gus and he then picked up his toy and went and laid on the floor and she laid down on his pillow..GIRLS RULE !!! (at least that is what gabby thinks !!!)

That is so cute and funny about Gus and Gabby!
I had a little shih tzu puppy named Suzie that I learned wouldn't live long. I rescued a 4 month old  male puppy form a puppy mill. He'd never been out of a cage or had any attention. He was like a zombie and scared of everything when I brought him home. Suzie used to get behind him and nudge him along when he feared something. Like if his ball rolled under the china cabinet, he was scared to go under after it. She'd nudge him to go for it and sometimes she'd just dive under and get it for him. She brought him out of this zombie state before I lost her.
My min pin and dachshund don't care much for each other. Maybe it because they are both males. They get along now, but don't really play together and they are always sneaking around and stealing from each other. They seen to be in competition with each other over everything.

We got Prissy first and for some reason she doesn't know that she is a minpin.  She is almost perfect and perfect acting.  Then we bought back the puppy that we sold to a friend as he raised pitbulls and could not get with the minpin program.  He abused her.  She is so full of minpin and minpin adventure that the two fit hand in hand.  Don't get me wrong, they fuss, but we all fit nicely in the bed at bedtime.  I got Prissy fixed and Phoenix is next.  We just haven't had the money yet and I don't want just anyone to do it.  Well, I got to thinking about Penny's question and think that if she is perfect right now and doesn't get into trouble then don't rock the boat.  Then again, I wonder what mine would do without each other.  The best thing to do is ask if you are ready to make the enormous adjustment to having to train again and maybe this one will be into everything and eating everything.  It is hilarious around here.  She is constantly eating my bras and Prissy just watches her.  I buy about two every couple of months.  I wouldn't swap my two for only one, but it is a big adjustment.  LOL  it is double the fun though for sure.

Well, like they say.....minpins are like potato chips in our house.  lol

It has been 17 years since we had just 1 dog in our house.
Actually, when we went to get our 1st pin we ended up with 2.  Siblings Sneakers & Fireball.  These 2 grew up with our chessie & I swear they never realized they were minpins.  Now we are a 4 pin house and I wouldn't want it any other way. (except if I was farther out in the country, had all the money I needed, didn't have to work & could rescue minpins & other dogs for a living..lol)  I don't ask for much, do I?

Penny sounds like such a good girl.  You could go the puppy route or you could rescue an older dog.  It's up to you...lifestyle, schedules, etc.  Penny may be content by herself.

Good luck on whatever you decide.

Just wondering if you got another dog or not??? A new one might not behave as well as Penny does, tho!! They sure are special! Keep us posted!

No we haven't gotten a new dog yet. If we do it will not be until June when our son is home during the day for summer break. Love all of your feed back. Makes you think real hard before jumping into it. Penny is such a good girl don't want to mess anything up!

You are to be commended for taking your time and giving this serious thought.
I kind of reget rescuing the doxie, but would probably do it again. A 40 year old mans mother called me crying that he had beat it so bad he injured his hand and she'd taken it from him and had it in her apt. where dogs aren't allowed and she wanted me to take him. I love him now and he's been here over 3 yrs. She really put me on the spot that day. Spinner would have preferred being an "only child" (other than the outside dog). He's spoiled and wants all our attention. I've had as many as 6 dogs in here at the same time and several had special needs that required a lot of time and attention...putting drops in the eyes every 4 hours for glaucoma and giving insulin shots twice a day. Kept a big chart on the table of who got what when.

ok so we got a cat... yep a cat. My brother in laws grandma died and we took the cat. This has been such a perfect match. They love each other. The cat is about 7 years old. Male and big. They play together and sleep together on our bed. Penny under the covers and the cat on top. Crazy how much they like each other. They even drink out of the same water bowl at the same time!

well, gus and gabby are now 8 and 7 and they are still buddies...getting a cat in this house would never work as gus carries around this 'buddy' of his and it looks like a cat, so cat in the house..NEVER..

gus and gabby are still as bonded as ever...gus has gotten alot more mellow in his older years..he never was one that loved to be loved on when we are in bed, as they both sleep with us....gabby has a ritual every night..she cuddles next to daddy and he kisses and loves on her..she does this for awhile and then, no more..she then scoots over to me and goes to sleep while she touches me with her butt or backside and her arm touches daddy.....now gus on the other hand, when he gets into bed, it is under the covers and DO NOT BOTHER ME....WELL, in the past month or so, he has been cuddling up to daddy (after gabby is done) and he eats the loving and kisses up and then to my side of the bed he comes...sleeps for the night...

during the day, they still go to their crates EXCEPT when we are home as gabby would be good as gold all day for hours upon hours, but NOT gus...he would be mad cause we would leave and would pee all over the house...if we are home, he will hold it if he has to but when we are gone, he will pee once a hour in spite....he pees in his crate on his blanket while we are at work every day...and when I come home I ask him  DID YOU GO PEE PEE IN YOUR CRATE ?  HE WHINES AND BARKS AT ME AND THEN RUNS TO THE DOOR ...sooo funny but he tells me that yes, he did pee so what are you going to do about it ??  he is too funny.

but glad that your baby has a playmate now..that is good, even if it is a cat ...  as long as they keep each other company, that is good..

Hi I have a pup out of a litter of four she seems to be getting balder between her eyes either she is or I am just spending so much time looking at how bald she is. Is it normal for some baldness. Everyone else look fine

How old is your puppy? Spinner went bald in places when he was a puppy but it was due to a disease....juvenile cellulitis. I'd ask a vet.
