That sounds likely. I found another procedure at http://home.um.edu.mt/chemistry/CH330/2.%20Inorganic/CP308.PDF that is similar to yours, but it does not say how to evaluate the purity of the products, other than checking their specific rotations. Interesting lab, nevertheless!
