Organic Chemistry Sites
Last Update: January, 2008

What is Organic Chemistry?
Brief overview of the subject from the Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia.

How Oil Refining Works
Topics include Crude Oil, The Refining Process, Fractional Distillation, Chemical Processing, and Treating and Blending the Fractions. By Craig C. Freudenrich.  Explore related HowStuffWorks articles under "Lots More Information" at this site.

IUPAC Nomenclature of Organic Compounds
The IUPAC rules for naming hydrocarbons and organic compounds containing halogens, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, and many others.  For practical explanations and examples, go to Dave Woodcock's excellent site here  (uses Chime or RasMol).

Grain Alcohol - Ethanol Properties and Preparation
Provides data regarding the physical and chemical properties of ethyl alcohol and details the methods for preparing it. From the Lycos Reference.

Aromaticity And Aromatic Hydrocarbons
Topics covered: the Huckel Rule, Classifications of Aromatic Compounds, Properties of Aromatic Compounds, Nomenclature of Aromatic Compounds, Electrophilic Aromatic Substitutions of Benzene, Substituent Effects on Polysubstitution, and Other Reactions Involving Alkyl Benzenes.  By Ralph Logan, Dallas County Community College.

Introduction to Aldehydes & Ketones
The Organic Chemistry Virtual Tutor gives a brief, slide show type of overview of the structure, bond polarity, and reaction types (nucleophilic addition and enolate ion formation) of aldehydes and ketones.  Requires Shockwave.

Aldehydes & Ketones: Nomenclature & Reactions
Good for review purposes and includes practice problems. Nice Chime graphic shows the atoms and electron clouds around the carbonyl group.  Unfortunately, some reactions are lacking in detail; for example, the role of the acid or base catalyst in the hydration and other reactions is omitted.  These mechanisms are presented in better detail here.

Carboxylic Acids
There are tons of web pages about carboxylic acids to choose from; this one from William Reusch's Virtual Textbook of Organic Chemistry gives an overview of the IUPAC nomenclature, properties, preparation, and reactions of carboxylic acids.  Includes reactions of esters and preparation of some carboxylic acid derivatives.  For a good introductory slide show format, see here.

Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE)
Information about MTBE, methyl tertiary butyl ether, from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.  MTBE is a widely used gasoline additive but controversial because of its potential toxic hazards.  Information about using ethanol, a nontoxic alternative to MTBE, may be found here.

Overview of Peptide Synthesis
Overview of the standard methods of peptide synthesis, including Fmoc and Boc methods which are done on a solid phase polymer support.

The Organic Chemistry Review
A Student's Guide to Organic Chemistry, by Laura Friedland.  This site provides a gentle introduction to organic chemistry, enjoyable to browse.  Topics covered include alkenes, alkynes, benzene, stereochemistry, substitution and elimination reactions, and spectroscopy.  Printable notecards are also provided.

Virtual Textbook of Organic Chemistry
Information on many organic topics, very detailed, with practice exercises. By William Reusch, Michigan State University.  The index for Dr. Reusch's Organic Chemistry Online can be found here.

On-Line Learning Center
Chapter by chapter information to accompany "Organic Chemistry, 5th Edition", currently one of the most popular organic textbooks, by Francis A. Carey.  An excellent site to review organic principles, nomenclature, reactions, and mechanisms.  Provided by the University of Calgary.

Organic Chemistry Lecture Notes
There are many organic lecture notes available online.  The following lecture notes are from Alex Roche, Rutgers University:  Organic I,  Organic II (in Word format, includes quizzes and exams).

Dr. Pendarvis' Organic Web Site
Lots & lots & lots of organic chemistry information and links!  Browse this page to to find the topic you are interested in.  By Dr. Richard Pendarvis, Central Florida Community College.

Organic-Chemistry.org
Find information about organic reactions based on name or type of bond formed.  Also has a list of protecting groups with descriptions, a chemical directory, and abstracts of published organic syntheses.

ChemFinder
A database search engine for compounds which does searches based on chemical name, CAS number, molecular formula, or molecular weight. An organic synthesis database is also available.

Spectral Database for Organic Compounds, SDBS
Includes MS, 13C-NMR, 1H-NMR, IR, Raman, and ESR spectra.  Searchable by multiple methods including compound name, formula, and CAS number.  From the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST).

FTIRsearch.com
Search for spectra by compound name, formuala, CAS number, molecular weight, or spectra match.  Free, but requires registration. (Formerly Spectra Online.)

Spectroscopy Problems
There are now quite a few sites that have IR and NMR spectra, problems, and tutorials.  The above is an excellent one from the University of Colorado at Boulder.  See also WebSpectra and NMR Tutor for more problems and examples, and Organic Structure Elucidations.

Organic Chemistry Online
A Library of calculated 1H-NMR spectra of 50 compounds, with tutorials and exercises in structure and bonding, spectroscopy, sterochemistry, and functional group reactions. Very nice!  By Paul R. Young.  A collection of 31 reaction mechanisms and other material is added here.

Organic Chemistry Crossword Puzzles
Test your knowledge!  Here is another.
