another exam question!!
Question asks for 2 syntheses of  2-pentanol from an aldehyde.

I figured gridnard reaction is good for one of the syntheses, but im stumped for the other. Nucleophilic addition using LiAlH4 gives the secondary alcohol, but you must start with a ketone.
Does anyone of a way of doing this?

You were probably thinking of the reaction of butanal with methylmagnesium chloride, but you can also do the Grignard reaction "the other way around" by reacting acetaldehyde with propylmagnesium chloride, which gives the same product.
