Does anyone know the extent of probate files available and where they can be viewed?  In working on a non-Dallas Co., MO family history, I was fortunate to find original wills, etc. in a file kept by the LaSalle Co., IL Gen. Society.  They had received the originals after the county had made microfilm copies and they kept these originals filed in folders in their temp-controlled vault.  I'd be happy just to have access to filmed records but need to know what location where such records are.  Thanks! -Janice

I had a private researcher undertake my probate search for Dallas County but
I believe you can access them at the county Courthouse. I do recall the
lady who did my research telling me that the records are physically kept at
an old museum which closes for the winter. I am not sure how extensive the
collection is.

Janice,

This was the situation in the summer of 2003 when I visited Buffalo looking for probate files.  An index is kept at the courthouse, but at that time, due to lack of storage space, the actual records were being kept in a private home there in Buffalo.  I'm not sure, but I don't think that situation has changed since then.

Information for the lady who maintains those records at that time was:   Leni Howe, 224 Hemlock Drive, Buffalo MO 65622.  Her telephone is 417-345-7297.  I don't know if she does lookups, but it never hurts to try.  And I'm sure if she no longer provides this service, she would know who can help you.

Lois, Thanks for the GREAT info!  Sorry, to be so long responding but in Nov-Jan, I FINALLY hooked up on my 3X great grandmother and that sent me on an incredible odyssey - all the way to an application to receive DAR registration.  I'm relocating back home to Kansas City next month, and plan to spend time in Buffalo as needed, so the referral is a big help!  Thanks again.  -Janice

Betty, thanks for this information.  I hadn't visited the Historical Society yet, but will plan to do so in a couple of months.  Lois
